Robert De Niro To Portray Bernie Madoff in HBO Biopic

Robert De Niro is about to portray his most notorious role based on a real-life subject since his role as Al Capone in "The Untouchables." De Niro has signed on for the part of financier Bernard "Bernie" Madoff for an in-development film for HBO.
Diana Henriques' book "The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust" is reported to be the source material for the movie, which is slated to be produced by De Niro and De Niro's production company, Tribeca Productions.
With his arrest on Dec. 11, 2008, Madoff became near-synonymous with the term "Ponzi scheme," due to the wide-scale financial fraud perpetrated through his investment firm, which cost his investors billions of dollars. Madoff entered a guilty plea and in 2009 began serving a 150-year prison sentence.
