The Staff Equipment Engineer provides technical support to manufacturing operations, supports day to day manufacturing operations with modifications to existing production equipment to improve safety, compliance, efficiency and/or reliability and seeks innovative solutions to support current and future manufacturing requirements. The position will execute or assist in the execution of capital projects that provide new capability/capacity or improve existing equipment.
The Staff Equipment Engineer provide daily technical support to Operations to resolve any equipment/software issues, minimizing equipment downtime, generates, coordinates and manages engineering change control documentation, including equipment and facility drawings; generates equipment test plans for qualification. The position contributes to the design, installation, startup, validation and operator/maintenance training for new or modified packaging/processing equipment, analyzes and provides corrective action recommendations for proposed equipment upgrades/modifications and implements cost effective solutions to reduce operating costs and meet GMP and safety requirements.
The Staff Equipment Engineer facilitates communications between vendors, design firms and customers for equipment purchase or retrofit, participates in internal and external audits as subject matter expert in areas of knowledge. This includes audit preparations, support in the back room and front room as necessary during inspections. The position requires judgment in applying established practices and diversified procedures, encounters situations and problems which do not fall clearly within the bounds of general standards precedents and May adapt or modify methods to meet varying situations.
The Staff Equipment Engineer takes action as indicated by approved policies and accepted standard practices, exercises ingenuity to take action in the absence of previous instructions, to develop new and/or improved work methods and resolves problems of an unusual nature, with supervisory review available. The position develops and reviews equipment designs, ensuring compliance with J&J guidelines, regulations and customer requirements, leads teams on medium to large scale equipment acquisition/modification projects to develop scope and schedules and cost estimates for these projects. The position will evaluate or assist in evaluating technology necessary to support manufacturing requirements.
The Staff Equipment Engineer determines modes of equipment failure and product impact, recommends options to Management/Customer/Stakeholders for appropriate corrective actions on process and equipment modifications to ensure equipment/process is robust and produces acceptable, quality product and troubleshoots equipment that is not performing as intended and quickly makes recommendations/medications to avoid downtime. The Staff Equipment Engineer must be able to seek out and evaluate innovative solutions for current and anticipate future manufacturing demands, to review and recommend engineering solutions for a wide variety of complex equipment problems, ranging from new processing methods, software programming, control systems, increased capacity for new products/presentations, while adhering to cost, safety, cGMP and environmental regulations and guidelines and to effectively communicate ideas to influence other stakeholders and managers in project team settings either as member and/or leader.
The Staff Equipment Engineer works extensively with external vendors/suppliers and internal customers to attain project goals; work with people from multiple internal groups, including Production, Quality, Process Engineering and Regulatory Affairs and works occasionally with J&J engineering affiliates to understand corporate procedures for equipment selection and procurement and to share ideas. The position is located in Vacaville, CA and requires up to 10% domestic and international travel.
Qualifications
It is required the Staff Equipment Engineer have a BA/BS degree. A Mechanical/electrical engineering or science related degree preferred. A minimum of 6 years of engineering experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing or related regulated industry is required. It is required the Staff Equipment Engineer possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience in initiating and bringing complex projects to conclusion and the ability to work independently and lead a team. It is preferred the successful candidate have prior experience managing contractors or entry level staff. It is preferred the Staff Equipment Engineer possess experience with pharmaceutical/medical packaging or processing equipment, equipment engineering experience and knowledge of cGMP's. Extensive and independent contact with vendor's representatives and project personnel preferred. The position is located in Vacaville, CA and requires up to 10% domestic and international travel.
