DePuy Orthopaedics is the Joint Reconstruction business offering orthopaedic devices, solutions and supplies for hip, knee and extremity reconstruction, in addition to cement and operating room products.

DePuy Synthes is currently recruiting for a Senior Scientist to be based in our Warsaw, IN location.

The Senior Scientist will provide technical support to multiple business units in the development of new polymer-based medical devices. Bring innovation and intellectual property value so that new product ideas can be generated. Be responsible for interacting with the business unit product development teams and the marketing group to differentiate device chemistry from competitor's chemistry. Oversee and participate in the daily laboratory equipment operations and productivity. Work actively with Engineers, Supervisors and Managers from all disciplines in resolving product quality issues, corrective actions and timely completion of these reports.

Conduct research directed toward the discovery and/or development of new materials for orthopaedic implants.

Responsible for performing well-conducted experiments, including experimental design, data summary and interpretation, report and manuscript preparation and review and adherence to applicable regulations and procedures.

Participate and consult with the internal and external scientific community to maintain state-of-the-art knowledge for application to experimental work and projects.

Work independently to plan, conduct, and manage multiple materials research projects to meet department and company objectives.

Make oral presentations on project work to company staff.

Write technical reports.

Present and publish research results to scientific and clinical community to support new product introductions.

Development, characterization and testing of metals, ceramics or surface coatings and modifications.

Develop an interactive network with outside collaborators to increase the overall capability of the group.

Qualifications


A minimum of a Master's degree in Polymer Science, Polymer Chemistry, or Material Science, engineering or related discipline is required.

A minimum of 3 years of experience in the development of polymer devices is required.

Experience with materials used in the medical device industry is an asset.

A background in polymer chemistry, processes and bulk polymer characterization techniques thereof (Thermal Analyses, Microscopy, Spectroscopy, Chromatography) is required.

Experience in new product development processes is preferred.

Good communication and presentation skills must be evident; peer review publications and presentations at significant conferences is a plus. Must be able to communicate detailed polymer characterization and behavior data to a diverse group of technical and non-technical associates involved in the product development process. Must be able to combine material development and characterization methods to solve problems. Possessing an in-depth understanding of polymer science or research fundamentals including the chemistry and structure-property relationships involved is preferred.

Good verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present at scientific meetings and submit to highly-respected, peer-reviewed journals is preferred.

Self-motivated, productive and excel in an environment fostering a cooperative team approach to science is preferred.

Ability to follow and write SOP's and Good Lab Practices is preferred.
