Under close supervision, assists during surgery as a member of the surgical team by preparing & organizing operating room prior to surgery, selecting & passing instruments during surgical procedures, maintaining operating room in aseptic condition following established policies & procedures; & assists w/ patient care during & after surgery. Conforms to prescribed policies & procedures regarding aseptic techniques. Maintain cooperative, courteous relationship w/ the patients, public, & other personnel.
Essential Functions:
- Assist physician during surgery as a member of surgical team
- Pass instruments & supplies; & assists as directed
- Scrub & conform to sterile technique for each procedure
- Assist in positioning & draping patient
- Provide proper retraction of tissue
- Assist in controlling hemostasis by applying a Bovie to a clamp
- Assist w/ sponging, suctioning, & performing sponge count
- Prepare suture for closure of surgical incision
- Apply proper surgical dressing as directed by physician
- Recognizes, responds to, & assists in acute emergency situations following established procedures & policies
- Hold & position video camera under direction of the surgeon
- Tie the pre-placed subcutaneous & skin stitches
- Assist in preparation of Operating Room (OR) as directed
- Arranges & assembles instruments, surgical trays, equipment, & various supplies
- Performs necessary scrub prior to each surgical procedure
- Removes, disassembles, and/or dispose of contaminated instruments, linens, & miscellaneous supplies
- Prepares instruments for sterilization
- Assist w/ room turnover between cases
- Maintains & ensures operational readiness of instruments, equipment, supplies, & sterilized items for surgical procedures specific to assigned cases
- May perform patient care functions such as prepping patients & operating a variety of equipment as directed
- Takes standby calls for the OR & responds per policy
- Performs other duties as required such as transporting patients, specimens & supplies, & may assist in orienting & training students and/or new staff personnel
Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
- One (1) year of operating room experience in scrub role within the last two (2) years or recent completion of operating room training program.
- Prior experience as first assistant, preferred.
- CPR certification required.
- Certified Operating Room Technician (CORT) or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required within six (6) months of hire.
- Ability to scrub all types of surgical cases except open heart.

Preferred Qualifications:
- One (1) year within the last three (3) years of surgical tech scrub experience in multiple specialties
