Johnson & Johnson is one of the largest and most broadly based manufacturers of healthcare products in the world, employing around 129,000 people worldwide, with a turnover of around $65BN. The company has 3 strands to its core business namely Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices/Diagnostics and Consumer. Johnson & Johnson Ltd is the Northern European arm of the Consumer division within the EMEA region and has responsibility for the marketing, sales and distribution of brands as diverse as Johnson's Baby Toiletries, Benadryl Cold & Flu remedies and Listerine Mouthwash. The company has undergone a number of changes in the last few years including the acquisition of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare and the amalgamation of the UK, Ireland and Nordics businesses in to a new Northern European cluster. Latterly the business has also absorbed McNeil Nutritionals in to the fold. The business is now run at this Northern European
Cluster level across all 7 of the GFOs.
The Business insights Department sits within the Marketing function and is charged with supplying the business with key insights covering both syndicated and consumer research. A vacancy has arisen in the Department for a Head of Consumer Research Northern Europe with primary responsibility for leading the consumer research agenda across all GFOs within the business. The role has arisen due to the increased focus and budget devoted to consumer research by the J&J Northern European cluster in 2013 and beyond. The role represents an ideal opportunity for the right candidate to work with a great deal of autonomy in shaping the future consumer research strategy for the company in conjunction with the Head of Business Insights.
The Purpose of the Head of Consumer Insights Northern Europe
The Head of Consumer Research Northern Europe will be expected to act as a key thought leader and consultant working alongside key members of the senior marketing team advising and implementing best practice research solutions to deliver business results. The role will involve the hands on delivery of high quality and pro-active insight on a day to day basis to key stakeholders in the UK business within the Marketing, Shopper and Sales functions as well as key members of the NE operating board. In addition, the person will be expected to provide strategic inputs in to the annual brand planning process.
The role will cover all aspects of quantitative and qualitative consumer research feeding in to the development of strategic brand plans, U&As, brand positioning, NPD, advertising, copy, packaging and claim development. The role will require that person to represent the voice of the consumer, shopper and healthcare professional within the UKI business, ensuring those
elements remain at the core of the brand planning process ongoing.
Principle Responsibilities
- To act as an internal consultant and thought leader in all areas of consumer research such that sound commercial recommendations can be made to the wider business. Act as a line manager and mentor to 3 direct reports, taking on responsibility for their ongoing development.
- To influence and persuade senior commercial management and senior marketing teams on research solutions and be bold enough to be able to challenge and push back when the correct approach is in danger of being compromised, ultilising their research expertise and confidence to explain their position.
- To tailor the right research solutions to business issues as they arise and prioritise research according to real business need, available budget and commercial priorities. To negotiate, commission and project manage consumer, shopper and healthcare professional research in areas such as the following:
- Insight Generation
- NPD, Concept & Packaging development
- Copy development and evaluation
- Brand positioning
- Brand and equity tracking
- U&As
- Claims development
- General consumer, shopper and HCP research
- To summarize key research insight & advise the Marketing, Shopper and Sales teams how to best leverage that insight within their brand and customer strategies.
- To liaise with Regional and Global Franchise contacts as appropriate. To input into Franchise initiated studies for Northern Europe and in return to ensure a communication flow of relevant NE initiated findings.
- Ensure the application of consumer insights across all functions such that research is maximised and duplication is avoided. Maintain records of research for the purpose of satisfying internal requirements around contractual compliance, adverse event reporting and healthcare compliance.
- Maintain a record of all financial investment in ad hoc research projects and continuous data and proactively support the business insights team with planning of business insights budgets.
- To project manage the brand & advertising tracking programmes across the entire portfolio to agreed methodologies.
- To proactively support the Head of Business Insights with action orientated interpretation of results and identifying subsequent business opportunities arising from these results.
Qualifications
- Degree level education preferred
- Strong numeracy & analytical background
- Min pass rate of 50% for the SHL numeracy testing preferred
Expected Experience and Competencies
Applications are invited from strong candidates working within consumer research. The ideal candidate for the role would be a strong consumer researcher with a demonstrable record of progression in their current career in either a blue chip FMCG client side environment or within a market research agency . Exposure to syndicated research sources such as IRI, Nielsen, Kantar and IMS will be of benefit but is not a pre-requisite for a successful application.
The following experience and competencies are required:
- Demonstrable record of progression and achievement in current career in FMCG with examples of how the application of consumer research has driven business results in a truly commercial environment.
- Confidence to interact with and influence senior managers as a thought leader across Marketing, Shopper and Customer functions as well as external agency contacts.
- Highly conversant with a range of quantitative and qualitative ad hoc research techniques with a proven ability to recommend the correct research solution for a range of business issues.
- A pro-active, can do attitude with a willingness to act as both a 'hands on' thought leader through own experience in research as well as being able to motivate more junior team members and key external agencies to deliver against the J&J research agenda.
- A willingness to 'have an opinion' and stand up for that opinion backed up by insight and the confidence to influence senior managers on a one to one basis and also in key brand strategy meetings.
- Exposure to syndicated data services such as IRI, Nielsen, Kantar and IMS is desirable but not essential.
Other Requirements
- Full UK Driving licence preferred.
- Able to work most weeks for 5 days a week in Maidenhead, Berkshire.
- Prepared to travel to Ireland, The Nordics (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway) the USA on an infrequent basis (international travel will be limited in this role and where deemed necessary for travel to take place as part of a project is usually planned well in advance).
- Prepared for infrequent travel to meet external agencies and/or observe consumer groups in London and elsewhere within a reasonable travelling distance of Maidenhead.
