Ethicon, Inc., now part of the Global Surgery Group of the Medical Device and Diagnostics sector of Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Staff Polymer Chemist, located in Somerville, NJ.

The Global Surgery Innovation organization has recently integrated in 2012 to support all 7 business units under Global Surgery, including General Surgery, Biosurgery, Energy, Acclarent, Mentor, Cardio Vascular, BWI and Sterilmed. Global Surgery Innovation functions include Business Unit R&D, Regulatory, and Clinical and Medical Affairs.

Ethicon Products, part of the General Surgery business unit, has a long history in both absorbable and non-absorbable polymers and leverages this expertise in designing clinically relevant medical devices, including sutures, meshes and films.

The Staff Polymer Chemist will conduct research toward new product development or existing product improvement and will contribute inventions, new design or techniques to solve technical problems or improve existing products or processes. The individual in this position must be a creative, hands-on chemist with interest and capability to design and develop new materials for medical devices from concept through product launch. The Staff Polymer Chemist will lead and function as a contributing member of multidisciplinary project teams in the design, development, and manufacturing of medical devices, and related product substances for surgical sutures, surgical devices, and other related products and processes. The Staff Polymer Chemist will also be responsible for new polymer and formulations development, for the design of materials that can be utilized to construct new and improving existing devices and for providing technical support to manufacturing and marketing as well as support project teams on selecting materials. The Staff Polymer Chemist will interact with surgeons and other customers to understand the unmet clinical needs, and collaborate with outside vendors, suppliers, consultants and academia to help design and improve the devices from an R&D and manufacturing perspective.

Qualifications


A minimum of an MS degree in Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or allied field is required. A PhD in an above mentioned fields, or allied fields are highly desired. A minimum of 5+ years of experience in an industrial environment as a technical leader and/or project leader is required. This position requires the successful candidate to be an adept, hands-on chemist with extensive experience in polymer synthesis and polymer characterization, especially of crystalline polymers is required. Good understanding of material characterization, structure-property and utilization towards application development is also required. Experience in medical devices product/process development with the technical acumen to reach fellow level is preferred. Experience working with bioabsorbable polymer synthesis, chararacterization and polymer processing technology is highly desired. Knowledge of medical devices regulations is preferred. Experience incorporating manufacturability into the new product development is preferred. Knowledge of Design/Process Excellence (Six Sigma) is preferred.

The ability to work in a team-oriented environment that embraces change, risk, and flexibility is needed. This individual must be capable of handling multiple projects/tasks at the same time. A demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team with sense of urgency against timelines is needed. Demonstrated ability to listen to customers' needs, develop solutions to meet their requirements, trust and respect is needed. This individual will have the potential to lead technical aspects within project teams. The successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. A passion and enthusiasm for innovation will be an asset. Proven problem solving skills and good interpersonal relationship and people skills will be needed.
