Performs a variety of procedures to assist in providing laboratory techniques & procedures, including venipuncture, capillary puncture & other blood drawing procedures, & comforts patients, as needed. Ensure proper collection & processing of laboratory specimens for home health, skilled nursing & assisted living facility patients. Uses appropriate barrier protection devices such as gloves, laboratory coat or smock. Observes proper hand-washing techniques.

Essential Functions:
- Greets, instructs & communicates to all patients in a courteous & professional manner
- Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection processes & is able to clearly communicate patient collection instructions
- Performs data entry to order appropriate test/s using laboratory information system
- Ability to utilize LIS, the automated medical record & the network PC in order to access patient information including, but not limited to specimen type, processing procedures, transportation & special requirements
- Follows department standard patient identification procedures
- Collects & properly labels specimens & performs venipunctures on a variety of patients including adults & pediatrics according to standard laboratory techniques
- Attends to minimal patient care as needed
- Performs waived lab testing & interprets results
- Enters results into the lab computer system & follows Alert Value Protocol as appropriate
- Documents appropriate QC & any necessary corrective action on all testing procedures
- Maintains & completes all required documentation including, but not limited to Phlebotomy Specimen log, Results Log, QC logs, vehicle logs & variance reports
- Receives & processes specimens received from patients & other departments
- Prepares, packages & transports (or arranges transport for) specimens as required
- Answers & assists w/ routine teleph1 inquiries in a courteous & professional manner
- Strictly adheres to universal precautions according to company policy to include, appropriate use of PPE at all times, proper disposal of biohazardous waste & sharps waste
- Completes & maintains the required laboratory orientation, training, competencies & on-going education as assigned to perform laboratory related functions
- Assist in maintaining & stocking an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies
- Maintains a clean & orderly work environment & disinfects work surfaces daily & as needed
- Performs other duties as requested to support the departmental needs
- Drives company vehicle to designated facilities according to daily assignments
- Ensures that the vehicle is locked & secure when unattended; maintain schedule logs
- Drives vehicle to make pick-ups & deliveries as requested by Dispatcher
- Performs & documents standard service requirements on company vehicle; including but not limited to filling gas tank, oil checks, transmission & brake fluid levels, checks air in tires & keeps vehicle clean inside & outside
- Notifies Dispatch of required maintenance & repairs

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited training program in phlebotomy
- Minimum of 6 months of concentrated phlebotomy experience within the past year may be substituted for the phlebotomy training program
- HS graduation or equivalent
- Ability to perform a variety of procedures to assist in providing laboratory information services, including blood drawing (including pediatric & geriatric patients), specimen handling, entering laboratory information into computer, & patient instruction for specimen collection
- General knowledge of medical terminology & routine laboratory techniques & procedures
- Effective verbal communication skills
- Must have demonstrated good customer service & phlebotomy skills
- Basic keyboarding skills required
- Valid Colorado license w/ no moving traffic violations dating the past twelve months is required
- Ability to perform pick-up & delivery services between designated locations
- Knowledge of metro area streets & highway systems
- Access to personal vehicle & sufficient auto insurance required
- Routine pager, on-call duties are required
