The Director, R&D Product Development is responsible for managing engineering resources and a significant budget for multiple Engineering functional activities (integration of core function or several small functions). The Director will manage shared resources to support all BULT/NPD, sustaining/support initiatives, work with ASP Project Management, manage the creation, operation and dissolution of cross-functional teams focused on executing product acquisition and NPD development projects in accordance with criteria specified in project charters (as specified by BULTS and ASP Board of Directors), and ensure NPD product development teams implement, support and deliver business results consistent with ASP business strategy. This position will demonstrate leadership in a matrix (non-traditional, non-hierarchical) environment without extensive staff support.
Specific responsibilities of the Director, R&D Product Development include the following: meet and hold others accountable for regulatory compliance and product quality; meet and hold others accountable for regulatory compliance and product reliability; assess efficiency of product development systems and develop and implement improvement plans; work with BULTS/senior management to develop ASP strategy; develop acceptance of ASP new product development products and services by internal and external customers; develop overall product development plans and budgets and ensure execution; ensure team leaders develop achievable work plans and contracts to execute product development and acquisition projects; ensure projects are executed properly and achieve market success; balance flow of resources among projects and maintain project priorities; and recommend cancellation of projects that will not meet set objectives.
Additionally, the Director, R&D Product Development will supervise the formation of optimal cross-functional teams and manage team leaders throughout the product development cycle; develop training and skills upgrade programs for team members; develop and train associates to present and future core competencies of the company; resolve conflicts within teams and between teams and other groups; provide on-going constructive feedback and coaching to team leaders to develop their skills and value to ASP as employees; participate in development of company business systems and work environment; and support corporate Vision & Mission statements and generally supervise direct reports, as assigned.
Domestic and international overnight travel may be required.
Qualifications
A minimum of BS in Engineering or a scientific discipline is required for this position; Graduate or Post-Graduate education is preferred. Significant professional experience in area of expertise is essential. Candidates must possess a minimum of 10 years of product development experience in the medical device industry as well as a minimum of 5 years of managerial experience.
Experience managing cross-functional product development teams is required, as is a demonstrated track record of successfully bringing products from concept to market on schedule and within budget.
The desired candidate will have a proven track record in people leadership, team development and conflict resolution and possess excellent communication skills, good judgment and strong decision making skills. The ability to form strong professional relationships and influence decision making is also essential for success.
Candidates must also possess the ability to balance schedule, cost and quality; have experience managing project finances and budgets; possess strong project management, organization and planning skills; and possess strong problem analysis and resolution skills. Focus on reliability and compliance is also required.
