DePuy Synthes Spine is the Spine business offering a comprehensive portfolio of spinal care solutions for the treatment of the most simple to the most complex spine disorders using traditional and minimally invasive techniques.

The Computer Science Engineer will report to the Adjacent Technologies Director. In this newly created position, the Engineer will provide technical direction and leadership in exploration, discovery, evaluation and early stage product development for computer aided diagnostic and surgical systems. The candidate will exercise independent judgment in evaluating and developing innovative computer based systems and tools; designing, developing, implementing and testing computer-based hardware and software. Design networks that connect computer systems, image guided surgery, hospital and OR equipments and work on integrating software programs with computer hardware. Create methods and assessment criteria related to relevant new technologies. Establish computerized system architectures to extend the state of the art in patient care management from operating room performance & efficiency to patient outcome and surgical intervention precision. Analyze, tune and prototype key applications the system architectures, including operating room data management, visualization, computer simulation, medical imaging, radiation-tracking, to name just a few. Activities will include system design, prototyping, design of experiments for optimization of systems architecture, health informatics, and IT integrated tools, instruments and OR capital equipment. Provides technical leadership to project teams from charter to launch for highly complex products; demonstrates the ability to execute complex, multi-disciplinary technical projects; develops corresponding patent strategies. Works with in-house teams, cross J&J teams, and external collaborators including companies and consultants to align technical project strategies with the regulatory, preclinical, and clinical strategies for complex products to meet business objectives.

The Computer Engineer Architect will be engaged in the refinement of novel insights and perform feasibility assessment on new concepts, with an emphasis on considerations of Systems Architecture, Analytics, Health informatics and computer security. Working knowledge of areas like computational science, software engineering, human computer interface, systems-level performance modeling, profiling, analysis and graphics are a plus. The candidate should ideally have some fundamental knowledge base in spine disease and techniques, although the emphasis in this position is on broad expertise in applied computer sciences as a member of a larger team, complimented by others who have true expertise in Spine treatment.

The New Technology Applied Computer Sciences Engineer will apply intensive and diversified knowledge of computer engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and fields, in particular guiding System Architecture design and the development of systems and tools that meet and exceed surgeon and patient needs. This position will make decisions independently on engineering issues by leveraging broad knowledge of applied computer sciences and DFMA principles, manufacturing processes, IT system architecture methodologies, and validation. Advanced techniques and the modification of practices in his/her field and related sciences and disciplines, such as open source computing, graphics, AI, software engineering, virtual reality, 3D parametric modeling, statistical tolerance analysis, and Process Excellence background are a plus. This position will lead in identification and subsequent interactions and development activities with External partners who bring essential synergistic technologies and capabilities.

This individual will design innovative system solutions for diagnosis and for minimal invasive surgical procedures; occasionally lead cross-functional project teams to commercialize products; mentor and develop less senior engineers either in the team or across the organization; and help to improve or establish design and engineering best practices. Plans and conducts significant projects with technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing and coordinating milestones and seamless transfer of projects to external partners or to new product development teams. Candidate is expected to contribute to inventions, new designs or techniques, which are materially significant in the solution of important clinical problems. S/he will be an effective champion for the platform with the experience to identify technologies for key growth areas.

This position will have a Strong cross functional collaboration with Strategic Marketing, Market Insights, IT, Regulatory, Quality, Clinical, Operations and others at appropriate points in the Concept Development process. Fosters a dynamic and globally oriented culture of responsible experimentation, willingness to fail, bold "out of the box" thinking, collaboration, disciplined adherence to innovation timelines, and self-starting accountability. Leverages capabilities within DePuy Synthes (e-Technologies, Office of Science & Technology, ITF, etc) and throughout J&J in bringing novel concepts to maturity and leverage J&J resources and knowledgebase to identify internal and key external technologies and potential partners. Collaborates with other New Technology teams in the US and Overseas in the creation of novel concepts and the disruptive redirection of existing technologies. Understand technological advancements, environmental changes, reimbursement, key competitor's offerings; and provide analysis on technological feasibility, I/P landscape, risk assessment, and sales and market considerations. Maintains a constant Global focus and consideration in all team initiatives, and is informed on Regional trends and VOC inputs. Qualifications


A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences or related scientific or engineering field with a minimum of 8 years of experience post-graduation, preferably involving health applications, or Masters and 6 years of experience in related area, or a PhD and 4 years of experience in related area. Background in computer architecture, compilers, parallel processing, signal processing and/or high performance computing with in depth knowledge of computer architecture is required. Experienced and energetic person with a proven track record of accomplishments in computer innovation and product development setting is required. Creative thinking and the ability to gather extensive amounts of information and synthesize them into concise meaningful recommendations that have the potential to impact the future direction of the company is a must. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multiple functions and expertise in building and maintaining relationships with internal / external stakeholders is required. Excellent negotiation skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills are required. Extensive breadth of experience and a strong working knowledge in Software Engineering, Information Sciences, Graphics & Human Interface, Health Informatics is required. A strong working knowledge in Computer Systems Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Security is preferred. Basic understanding of human anatomy and neurophysiology is required. Experience in Spine related field with knowledge and experience with all spinal pathologies and treatment alternatives is preferred. Strength in Strategic and Creative thinking, adjacent technology experience, and patent production is required. Previous experience with product development up to commercial launch is desired. Proven inventiveness, experience generating or contributing to meaningful novel ideas or patents is a must. Familiarity with the FDA regulated environment, approval process and pathways (510K, IDE, PMA, etc) is a plus. This position is based in Raynham, MA, and may require travel up to 15%.
