Reporting directly to the Business Unit Communication Leader, Internal Medicine, the Director, Product Communication, is responsible for the strategic planning, development and implementation of integrated communication / PR programs to support the business objectives of the North America Internal Medicine operating unit, particularly with regard to its cardiovascular medication. Responsibilities include providing communication counsel to the business, public relations activities for launch brands and promoted products (including disease awareness activities where appropriate), organizational communication and issues management.

Primary Responsibilities:

Serve as a lead commercial resource for communication / public relations support for launch products and lifecycle management of promoted products: Provide counsel to business and brand leaders on communication strategies, both external and internal. Work directly with and support as appropriate the Therapeutic Area Communications Leaders for Cardiovascular/Metabolics. Develop and implement disease awareness and branded communication strategies and programs for promoted and launch products that help brands meet franchise business objectives; includes media analyses and outcome metrics to measure success / impact of PR initiatives. Develop and oversee assigned public relations budgets. Identify, select and manage public relations agencies and product budgets. Align regional PR plans with global plans and strategies, and foster sharing of best practices between markets. Participate as an active member of brand and launch teams. Build relationships with and act as liaison to key third-party influencers and external constituencies, such as L&A partners, patient advocacy groups and professional organizations, for public relations activities. Work closely with J&J Corporate Communication and Investor Relations to ensure message alignment. Develop and enhance relationships with key media.

Issues management / Crisis communication: Proactively identify and manage potential promoted brand issues, including liaising with Legal, R&D, new business development, Johnson & Johnson Corporate Communication, Investor Relations, and L&A partners, etc. Develop proactive issues management strategies, including for issues arising from relevant therapeutic areas, marketed / legacy products, and local market legislative/regulatory issues. Develop messages and serve as spokesperson for media inquiries.

Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, business or related discipline (communications or journalism a plus) is required; Master's degree preferred. Proven performer with 10+ years of experience managing health care public relations programs in a company, NGO, government agency or public relations agency is required. Direct health care / pharmaceutical / product experience; Proven track record of successful public relations / communications, corporate communication, product approval and launch communication support and / or media relations achievements. Ability to develop successful working relationships with senior executives is required. Experience in crisis / issues management is also required. Experience dealing with national and local media, including lay, trade and social media as well as professional / trade and third-party organizations are necessary. Experience in managing project budgets / schedules are required. Candidate must have strong working knowledge of social media and other new media technologies with track record of use in internal and/or external PR activities. Supervisory experience is preferred. This position requires strong leadership competencies, specifically in terms of influence management, effectively gaining consensus for new approaches, managing through ambiguity and effectively handling multiple stakeholders. Must demonstrate ability to work as part of a team, but also be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. This position is based in Raritan, NJ and may require 10% travel.
