The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for the assessment of selected patients in the designated service. The NP performs physical examinations, confers w/ patients in person & by phone/electronically, collaborates w/ others in the department to assure smooth flow of patient care consistent w/ established quality indicators & participates in the overall coordination of patient care. The NP reports to the Chief of the designated service & to the Department Manager. NPI shall participate in a NP mentoring program w/in the first six (6) months of employment.

Essential Functions:
- Practices under the standard procedure established for the NP role consistent w/ KP policy & in accordance w/ requirement set forth by the CA Board of Registered Nursing
- Conducts age appropriate assessments of patients, including history taking & physical examination consistent w/ department protocol
- Performs assessment/data collection in an on-going systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual & cognitive status; patient/family education, family involvement & patient advocacy
- Consults w/ supervising physician or other clinicians as dictated by patient need & assessment findings
- Participates w/ physicians & other clinicians in the department to assure effective patient care consistent w/ quality indicators for patients cared for in the designated service
- Reviews medical record for follow up or ordering of diagnostic studies under established protocols
- Establishes & maintains communication w/ other health care providers & departments to ensure operational efficiency & effectiveness & to promote consistency & continuity of care
- Establishes effective working relationships w/ members of the health care team, patients, & families
- Acknowledges staff rights & cultural & ethical beliefs
- Delegates appropriately & coordinates duties/activities of health care team members
- Evaluates effectiveness of care given by team members
- Demonstrates knowledge of & applies safety principles as identified by the institution
- Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, & documenting events
- Demonstrates responsibility & accountability for own professional practice
- Participates regularly in staff development activities for unit & department personnel
- Demonstrates knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality & risk management in all aspects of patient care & unit functioning
- Participates in unit & department Performance Improvement activities
- Participates in nursing research activities as requested. Identifies & solves problems effectively
- Demonstrates a service philosophy in all interactions w/ patients, families, & all members of the health care team
- Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers & telecommunication modalities to document, track & convey information
- If practicing in a specialty role, fulfills the expectations established for the particular role
- Perform other related duties as necessary
- This job has no supervisory responsibility
Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
- New graduate Nurse Practitioner or newly employed New Practitioner with less than twelve (12) months experience as a NP
- Master's degree in Nursing
- New graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program
- Completion of NP program at the master's level with certification
- National certification as NP required (Certification from one of the following bodies required: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; American Credentialing Center; National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties; National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses)
- Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in California required
- Must have a NPI and meet Medicare requirements for PTAN (Provider Transaction Account Number)
- Current California RN License with California BRN NP certification
- California BRN issued Furnishing Number met in the BRN specified timeframe (These hours may be accumulated during a period of time that is not less than six (6) months (minimum of twenty-four (24) weeks)
- Current BLS required
- Depending on the particular specialty, ACLS and/or NALS and/or PALS or PEARS may also be required for the position
- Must meet California issued Furnishing Number requirements within specified time frame
- Current DEA, if required for specialty
- NP-I shall participate in a NP mentoring program within the first six (6) months of KP employment
- BLS certificate required
- Must meet credentialing requirements established for nurse practitioners within the Kaiser system. (Master's degree in Nursing and National Certification from one of the following organizations: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; American Credentialing Center; National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties; National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses.)
