Research and development areas encompass novel targets in neurologic disorders, gastroenterology, oncology, infectious disease, diabetes, hematology, metabolic disorders, immunologic disorders, and reproductive medicine.

The Immunology Disease Area Stronghold Leader will report to Global Immunology Therapeutic Area (TA) Head, and serve on the Immunology Senior Leadership Team. This position will be responsible for building a matrix team capable of determining a scientific strategy and business plan for discovery and development. The strategy will aim to sustain leadership commercially and in the scientific/medical community through bringing forward differentiated new products and patient solutions including co-diagnostics, and forging strategies for disease interception in the longer term. The Disease Area Stronghold (DAS) Leader will be the owner of the DAS strategy charter which will address unmet medical needs, identify compelling internal and external scientific approaches, evaluate commercial and scientific capabilities and gaps, and provide an ongoing analysis and prioritization of the portfolio of assets at all stages of research and development. Leadership of the Immunology DAS requires a recognized expert with detailed understanding of the pathophysiology underlying the immune mediated disease, ability to critically evaluate immunology drug targets and drug platforms with potential to address the disease, a detailed understanding of the clinical and regulatory requirements required for product development and approvals in the disease area, and an extensive network with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and scientific leaders. The DAS Leader will drive the execution of the DAS strategy through collaboration with functional areas (including Discovery, Biomarkers, Translational Medicine/Early Development, Full Development and Commercial) and will ensure the DAS strategy is aligned with the overall Immunology TA and Janssen 2020 strategies. The DAS Leader will also define the priorities and approach to external opportunities in close collaboration with the Janssen Innovation Centers.

The main priority of this position will be leadership of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease DAS, although depending on the expertise of the individual, additional DAS responsibilities may be added. The DAS Leader will have close collaborative relationships with the Immunology research and development teams focused on Rheumatology, Dermatology, and Pulmonary diseases. As a member of the Immunology leadership team the DAS Leader will contribute to driving continued leadership in Immunology through ensuring access to the most exciting science and the translation of early science into transformational new products for patients suffering from immune mediated diseases.

Qualifications


The successful candidate will have an M.D. (or equivalent), Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in an immunology related discipline with a focus on pathogenesis and basic and/or clinical research in inflammatory bowel diseases with at least 15 years of experience.

He/she will have a proven track record of accomplishments in disease specific clinical research, translational research/medicine and clinical development as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, patents, leadership in scientific organizations, and successful record of drug discovery and/or development for immune-mediated diseases. They will be internationally recognized as a research & development (R&D) leader in the immunology of inflammatory bowel disease and/or a related area of immunology with a strong publication record.

The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated record of accomplishments in drug development including introducing new projects into the pipeline, and product approvals.
