The Head of High Performance Computing, HPC, will help shape the long term vision and strategy of the High Performance Computing & Visualization (HPC&V) group. He/she will have a proven ability to promote and support the use of high-performance computing, visualization and massive data storage systems to scientists to expand their research impact. He/she will be responsible for managing and conducting leading-edge research and application support for the users of HPC systems and for performing research on HPC tools and algorithms to address the many "Big Data" problems within our company. He/she will manage the delivery of scientific modeling, analysis and visualization of data collected internally and via external collaborations in support of R&D business groups. He/she will support therapy areas and other stakeholders from a HPC&V perspective by developing and leading a successful program in scientific applications research (quality of science, staffing, and budget oversight) and advancing the scientific mission of the business groups. This individual will lead computational analysis efforts using HPC&V of data generated from internal R&D and via external collaborations. He/she will implement methods and supporting tools for analyzing and visualizing high-dimensional datasets. This person will plan and execute training programs for scientists and engineers throughout Janssen and enhance the ability of researchers to exploit HPC&V in their work. This individual will design and implement approaches to solve complex computational and mathematical problems as they relate to interpreting biomedical data. This includes development of new research directions in the application of HPC in support of the evolving needs of the R&D business groups. He/she will perform research relevant to the mission of the organization and publish high quality research. This person will effectively communicate data and results to stakeholders on project teams and work effectively with IT and informatics colleagues across pharma sectors. He/she will take responsibility for personnel management, including but not limited to performance appraisals and staff development plans. This person will provide effective and meaningful performance feedback to individual staff members. He/she will select and retain highly qualified staff, develop capabilities of staff, and ensure that staff is competent, trained, and qualified for assigned work and ensure that staff are effectively utilized, rewarded, and motivated
Qualifications
A minimum of a PhD degree in Computer/computational sciences, Physical/Natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational/Systems Biology or a related discipline is required. A minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience in HPC is required. Candidates with industry experience preferred. Extensive experience analyzing high-dimensional datasets with a substantial publications record in HPC research and applications is required. This role will require a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative research programs and demonstrate a proven capability to work effectively in a team environment. Personnel management skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Experience with drug discovery and development practices and project support in a large pharmaceutical setting is a plus. This person must be independent, self-motivated and innovative. The ability to excel in a goal-oriented, multifaceted and fast-moving team environment is required. A track record of strong management skills and demonstrated ability to lead a group of scientists to deliver on objectives in defined timelines is required. Knowledge of HPC practices within a major HPC facility is a plus. Outstanding communication, organizational and leadership skills, with a successful track record of collaborating with cross-functional scientific teams is required. This role will require up to 25% domestic/international travel. The role can be based in Beerse, Belgium or Spring House, PA.
