Kaiser Permanente (KP) is making a significant investment in Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, processes and staffing in order to engineer, deploy and operate an enterprise level electronic medical services network. Within KP, this infrastructure is referred to as the Medical Grade Network (MGN). Specifically, this job opening is related to the testing and remediation of existing wireless systems used in the act of patient care as well as assisting in the development of the next generation platform that is currently being designed.

Within Care Delivery facilities, wireless infrastructure is used to facilitate patient and member care. Today, the wireless infrastructure consists of the following major components:
- Voice and Video over WiFi (V/VoWiFi) mobile devices capable of not only voice and video, but messaging that integrates clinical applications and workflow.
- Real-time Location (RTLS) technology (currently 802.15.4 and 802.11) that enables improved clinical workflow, asset tracking and patient tracking for an improved patient experience.
- End-user devices in many shapes and forms. Some of these devices are proprietary, highly specialized medical devices. Others are standards-based platforms requiring engineered security solutions.
- 802.11n technical strategy and engineering activities.
- Telemetry Patient Monitoring Systems
- Various types of in-building and dual-mode wireless handsets used for both voice and message communications.
- Mobile Carts comprising of the physical mobile furniture and the technology deployed in these solutions.
- User applications comprising the applications accessed over the wireless infrastructure in the service of care delivery (primarily KP Health Connect).
Essential Functions:
- Assist the extended corporate IT wireless team on developing new wireless product standards.
- Revise the existing systems up to the latest revisions and new features need to be enabled to support customer use cases.
- This position will heavily focus around a solid foundation of the IEEE 802.11 protocol along with a deep understanding of RF fundamentals.
- Work with Wireless Product Management on testing and evaluating products that will contribute to the overall Kaiser corporate IT (KP-IT) standard.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field and/or a minimum of 4 years of equivalent work experience.
- A minimum of 15 years of network and/or telecommunications engineering experience.
- Expert level protocol knowledge of IEEE 802.11 standards up to and including IEEE Std. 802.11-2012.
- Minimum of 3 years of strong, technical wireless design and engineering skills.
- 1 year of Hands-on experience with Cisco and/or Aruba wireless and wired infrastructure products.
- 3 years of experience with enterprise Wi-Fi deployments, ideally in healthcare.
- Ability to lead a team of engineers of diverse skills and value contributions.
Preferred Qualifications
- CWNE certification preferred.
- Knowledge of wireless design techniques for RTLS and VoWiFi applications
- Understanding of hospital workflow scenarios
- VoWiFi product experience desired (Cisco, Vocera, Ascom, SpectraLink, etc.)
- Knowledge or experience with integration products (Emergin, Ascom Unite, GlobeStar, Extension, etc.)
- Able to effectively prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Excellent customer service focus and analytical problem solving abilities.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication and presentation skills.
- Highly self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
- Certification or equivalent knowledge related to Cisco CCNA/CCDA and Aruba ACMA certifications required.
- Excellent communicator with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively plan and collaborate with others
- Ability to present ideas and new designs to senior technical personnel and management
- Proficiency in Wireless Security methods such as: PEAP, EAP-FAST, WPA(2)
- Knowledge of Wireless Engineering tools (AirMagnet, OmniPeek, Cognio, etc.)
- Wireless troubleshooting methodologies and techniques
- Knowledge of Cisco based wireless components
