Cleans, sterilizes, assembles, inspects, stores, & dispenses instruments, equipment, & supplies used in surgical procedures. Operates & maintains washing & sterilization equipment.
Essential Functions:
-All of the following are the same as the Surgical Instruments Technician.
- Receives surgical instruments following there use & soaks them in a water & chemical solution.
- Pre-washes each instrument by hand to remove visible soil & debris.
- Places instruments into appropriate washer or steam autoclave & sets controls to assure sterilization.
- Inspects, sorts, & places instruments into specified surgical sets according to packaging procedures, labels sets to indicate contents, & places them in storage.
- Removes damaged instruments & equipment from inventory & notifies supply supervisor.
- Prepares documentation to accompany damaged item(s) & packages damaged instruments & surgical equipment for pickup by vendor or contractor.
- Maintains adequate inventory for replacement of damaged instruments.
- Assists operating room staff to select appropriate sets of instruments for scheduled procedures.
- Completes, records, & files biological testing for all sterilizers according to established procedure.
- Advises clinical staff regarding the washing, sterilization, & packaging of instruments & equipment.
- Adheres to all Policies, Procedures & utilizes Manufacturers Guidelines for the management of all instruments & equipment.
- Performs other related duties as directed.
In addition to those duties, this position will perform the following lead duties:
- Makes day-to-day work assignments for department staff; monitors the progress of activities & projects.
-Assesses workload on an on-going basis & makes special assignments during peak & slow periods.
- Triages issues daily & appropriately diffuses or elevates to management based on severity of issue in accordance w/ patient safety policies.
- Performs highest level technical duties.
- Serves as a resource for other staff members answering questions & providing instruction as necessary.
- Orients & trains new staff members. Trains existing staff members in new or revised procedures.
- Performs special projects as assigned by supervisor.
- May have input into performance appraisals.
- May assist in developing & revising department procedures.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- 4 years of experience as instrument processing technician in a hospital setting.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician or Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician (CSPDT) required.
- General understanding of aseptic techniques & sterilization methods required.
- Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software required.
- In order to work effectively w/ patients, must have effective interpersonal & communication skills & be able to stand, walk, bend, lift at least 50 pounds, hear, speak & see required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of central supply technology course preferred.
