Responsible for the recording of accounting transactions on Statutory (STAT) and GAAP basis. Other responsibilities include performing account variance analysis and reconciliations, preparing financial statements and schedules. Plans, coordinates and files reports to management and regulatory agencies.
Essential Functions:
- Participates in month-end close activities including preparation of GAAP and STAT journal entries, variance analyses and account reconciliations.
- Prepares Statutory Financial Statements and schedules including filings to various states.
- Participates in and/or leads projects of moderate to complex scope as assigned.
- Reviews financial reports for accuracy and provides analysis of various complex accounts.
- Performs financial analysis, translates data into management reports and makes recommendations for the management of financial resources.
- Researches and resolves questionable transactions (includes standard monthly data and ad-hoc requests).
- Prepares monthly data reconciliations and resolves outstanding reconciling items timely.
- Pursues business issues impacting the general ledger in a proactive, independent manner.
- Recommends methods and procedures to improve specific task-related activities and the functioning of the accounting department.
- Resolves issues with other staff or departments without management involvement.
- Collaborates with other staff or departments with minimal guidance.
- Communicates issues and resolutions to management and affected areas/departments.
- Utilizes tools such as system queries and downloads, Excel macros, and Access database.
- Prepares interim and year-end schedules for auditors and DOI examiners.
- Creates and maintains current desk procedures and manuals.
- Investigates and resolves issues and completes special projects as needed.
- Reviews reconciliations, journal entries and reports prepared by Associate Accountant or Accountant. Provides guidance/direction to team members as needed for the results of the review.
- Participates in training newly hired Associate Accountants or Accountants.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Generally five (5) years demonstrated experience performing detailed accounting functions including preparation of supporting schedules, journal entries, financial statements and account reconciliations.
- Four (4) year degree in related field or equivalent experience.
- Excellent spreadsheet (Excel), word processing (Word), and database (Access) skills required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and problem solving skills.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and accounting procedures.
- Knowledge and ability to translate raw data into input formats that will ultimately generate accurate financial and management reports.
- Aptitude for numbers, strong attention to detail and well organized.
Preferred Qualifications: - Corporate reporting experience.
- Basic understanding of health insurance.
- Intermediate knowledge of data structure and data relationships.
- Insurance industry experience a plus.
- Basic understanding of statutory accounting principles a plus.
- CPA, CMA or CIA certifications preferred.
- Experience using project management methodologies.
- Public accounting experience or internal audit experience a plus.
