The manager of Surgical Services is responsible for managing the daily unit operations of Surgical Services (PACU/SPU and or the OR/OR Support Systems and ACU). The Director jointly reports to the Associate Administrator and the Regional Director of Surgical Services who have delegated responsibility for these nursing units. The Director manages personnel, provides safe and cost-effective care, ensures a safe environment and supports an efficient and cooperative interdepartmental work flow through perioperative units.
Essential Functions:
- EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF UNIT OPERATIONS:
- Manages within budget authority and maintains ongoing process of identifying, evaluating and implementing cost structure improvements to develop a basis for assessing overall cost effectiveness in units.
- Undertakes appropriate planning of same regarding effective deployment of resource allocations, staffing/acuity system through continuous evaluation, revision and communication (written and verbal) of unit staff matrix and resources.
- Maintains effective collaborative physician/colleague relationships to achieve financial targets. Measured by: Unit Costs, Actual to Forecast +/- 1% variance at year end.
- PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT:
- Interviews and hires staff for PACU, SPU and or the OR/OR Support Systems and ACU.
- Provides leadership n direction in support of the organization and departmental goals and objectives.
- Conducts performance appraisals.
- Counsels employee and acts on disciplinary problems.
- Assures that employee providing services have the knowledge and skills required to provide age-appropriate care to patients and families through education, training or experience.
- Develops and maintain staffing patterns for the patient care units.
- Coordinates and chairs staff meetings.
- Monitors compliance of staff with employees.
- QUALITY ASSURANCE/IMPROVEMENT:
- Participates in data gathering and analysis.
- PROVISION OF QUALITY PATIENT CARE:
- Develops and updates policies, procedures and standards of care for the units and monitors compliance with those standards.
- Supervises and assists in the delivery of patient care.
- Develops and achieves departmental goals and objectives in support of Surgical Services and Inpatient Services.
- Coordinates inter-departmental and intra-departmental problem resolution.
- Serves as a resource to other departments in area of specialty.
- MAINTAINS COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATORY STANDARDS:
- Prepares for local and inter-regional survey, monitoring and responding to quality assurance issues and safety, environmental and pharmacy inspections.
- FISCAL MANAGEMENT OF HOSPITAL OPERATIONS:
- Maintains effective working relationships with nursing management team and other hospital managers to facilitate cost-effective resource allocation in the Division of Nursing. Measured by: Hospital NHPPD and Per Diem Rate Actual to Forecast +/- 1% variance at year end.
- LABOR MANAGEMENT:
- Cooperative, efficient work environment as a result of consistent interpretation and application of contractual guidelines. Measured by number, type and resolution of grievances.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) in OR/Perioperative.
- High school diploma or GED.
- RN License in Oregon.
- Current BLS w/AED certification.
- Demonstrated leadership role.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous management experience in a similar role or in acute care setting is preferred.
- B.S. degree or M.S. degree is preferred.
- Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act, JCAHO, Labor Law, all related and affiliate contracts, Workmen's Comp., KSMC Policies and Procedures, Human Resource Policies and Procedures, O.S.H.A., H.C.F.A., Medicate/Medicaid, Health Department, Employee Benefits, National Labor Relations Board, and Standards of Practice of Professional Organizations is preferred.
- Knowledge of financial/economic principles preferred.
- Communication skills preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge in area of clinical experience preferred.
Salary Range: $46.49 - $83.50
