R&D Internship opportunities are in the following areas: Informatics and Controls Systems, Materials Science, Mechanical Design, and Mechanical Engineering.

Informatics and Controls Systems: Assist with building the infrastructure to access data from disparate data sources to create meaningful insight to solve complex problems normally requiring a high level of human intervention. Assist with connecting to data sources, linking data sources, creating applications to enhance business processes, implementing text analytics and creating business process specific search interfaces. Electrical Engineering or Computer Science student is preferred. Basic knowledge of programming i.e. Java, .NET, and/or databases such as MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle are preferred.

Materials Science: Investigate the interaction of various chemical components and their impact on finished medical devices. Project work may include formulations, photoinitiated polymerization, device processing of finished product, raw material analysis, and characterization of the finished device. Most projects involve a combination of chemical handling, blending, and device characterization. Chemistry or Material Science student is preferred. Completion of Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science, and/or Chemistry courses are preferred.

Mechanical Design: Process data using Matlab and MSC Marc software (or other finite element analysis software packages). Utilize math and problem solving skills. Experience or academic course work with Matlab and/or FEA software. Math, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science student is preferred.

Mechanical Engineering: Apply fundamental engineering skills to assist Senior Engineers in the planning, development and design of processes and equipment for the manufacture of contact lenses. Document all projects in the form of a technical report. Mechanical Engineering student with SolidWorks experience is preferred.

Qualifications


Candidates must be enrolled (not necessarily taking classes) in an accredited college/university during the Summer (May/June-August) 2013 Internship. Students must be pursuing at least a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Math, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or other related technical academic major. Candidate must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer (May/June-August) 2013 Internship. Completion of at least sophomore level coursework is required. A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is strongly preferred. Demonstrated leadership and/or participation in campus/community service activities is desired.

This position is located in Jacksonville, Florida. Students must be able to provide their own transportation to this location. A stipend will be offered to students that meet the commuting distance eligibility requirements. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1-B status) now or in the future.
