Ethicon, Inc., a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a Staff Engineer within Research & Development, located in Somerville, NJ.
The Ethicon Surgical Care business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices-that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon Surgical Care business combines products and services of two market leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. The Staff Engineer works on projects and problem solving of varied scope where analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors. The qualified candidate must exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine the appropriate action needed. The candidate will provide technical leadership and support for both New Product Development and Sustaining projects, primarily related to electromechanical medical devices. The position will be responsible for selecting design directions and modifications of system components.
Apply knowledge of general engineering principles, materials, DFMA & reliability to achieve product design requirements. Work one-on-one with customer stakeholders to identify procedure and/or product opportunities and evaluate potential technical solutions. Interpret customer & marketing input to define technical design requirements. Maintain idea notebooks. Utilize QFD (quality function & deployment) JOC (jobs, outcomes & constraints), VOC (voice of customer) methodologies & surgical procedure knowledge to define product & design options. Provide innovative product, system & component design solutions. Perform detailed design analysis & provide input or approval for detailed design specifications. Establish appropriate testing strategy to insure adequate safety factors or margins. Perform product testing to insure adequate safety factors or margins. Formalize concepts, breadboards & prototyping. Provide support to patent attorneys for patent filing. Consult with materials technology group for biomaterial approvals. Assist in developing & monitoring project plan, budget, contingency plans & work estimation. Coordinate integration of system and component designs. Provide technical leadership to product development team. Learn medical terminology, procedures & instrumentation. Provide peer feedback & may mentor junior associates as required. Model electromagnetic & electromechanical devices & systems. Calculate product parameters to provide adequate insulation to prevent voltage breakdown. Design electromagnetic devices for tissue models with guidance from upper level engineers. Develop error budget analyses of electromagnetic & electromechanical systems. You will be making a vital contribution to the New Product Development pipeline and transforming patient care through innovation. Our R&D Engineer executes specific & general assignments/projects that provide innovative, functional, cost effective & validated product designs in a team based environment.
Qualifications
A minimum of a BS degree in an engineering discipline is required.
A minimum of 7 years experience in a design/manufacturing environment is required.
It is required to possess electromechanical design, testing and implementation and troubleshooting experience. It is preferred the successful candidate possess electro-mechanical assembly, component manufacturing processes (plastics, metals, printed circuit boards) and process validation and experience.
Experience with modeling tools such as SoildWorks is required.
The Staff Engineer should be capable of completing design and engineering tasks with minimal support and have strong verbal and written communication skills. It is preferred the successful candidate have medical device manufacturing experience and knowledge of the FDA regulated environment. The Staff Engineer should possess the ability to influence decision making in a cross-functional matrix environment, ability to present information in an organized fashion to train, communicate and gain alignment and ability to partner and collaborate with associates and business partners. The position is located in Somerville, NJ and requires up to 20% domestic and international travel.
