AREA COORDINATOR The University of Virginia, a state supported institution with an enrollment of 20,000 students, invites applications for the position of Area Coordinator. The primary focus of Housing and Residence Life is to provide services and programmatic direction for all on-Grounds residential students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, and conference guests. With over two million square feet of residential building space, Housing and Residence Life strives to create inclusive environments that support the academic, cultural and social goals of the University. Specific living and learning programs include language immersion houses, three residential colleges, a transfer student focused community, and a comprehensive first year experience. Residential environments encompass a diverse array of building styles including traditional residence halls, apartment complexes, townhouses and single family homes. The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for the administrative and programmatic management of one or more residential areas (First-Year, Upperclass Apartments, or Living-Learning Communities). The AC will work collaboratively with student staff to create an atmosphere that supports the personal and academic development of students, encourages engagement in the cultural and social goals of the University, and fosters a safe living environment. The AC will promote self-governance among the residents in order to build a community where individual rights are respected. The Area Coordinator is a full-time, live-on position with University Staff status. The position reports to an Assistant Dean within the Residence Life unit of Housing & Residence Life. PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES Partner with undergraduate student Co-Chair in the supervision of staff and development of area goals. Supervise and evaluate Senior Residents (undergraduate hall directors) in designated area in a unique self-governing system. Serve as an educator by developing student leadership and encouraging community investment. Provide crisis response and conflict resolution to community residents. Provide guidance on the growth and development of Living-Learning communities in assigned area. Responsible for budget and facilities management. Participate in Area Coordinator on-call coverage on a rotating basis Represent the department and collaborate with other division and university units. Provide direct management support for departmental processes and committees QUALIFICATIONS Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or a related field by June 1, 2013. A strong commitment to the Universitys core values of student self-governance and diversity. Understanding of student development and residential community development models is preferred. 1-2 years professional experience, including supervision & crisis management, preferred but not required.
