The Staff Engineer works on most assignments with instructions about the general results expected. May receive technical guidance on the most unusual or complex problems, but independently determines and develops approaches to solutions. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Erroneous decisions or recommendations or failure to get results would normally result in serious program/project delay and considerable expenditure or resources.

The Staff Engineer applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields, makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the organization in conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work and requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of his/her field and related sciences and disciplines. The position will have supervision and guidance related largely to overall requirements; critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and other duties may be assigned.

The Staff Engineer consults with supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments and is responsible for or more of the following:
- In a supervisory capacity, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs a large important engineering project or a number of small projects with many complex features.
- As an individual researcher, carries out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures.
- Work is expected to result in the development of new or improved techniques or procedures.
- Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined equipment, materials, processes, products, and/or methods.
- As staff specialist, develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others.
- Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests, products or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.

The Staff Engineer performs as a staff consultant on a technical specialty, a type of facility or equipment, or a program function, may technically supervise, coordinate and review the work of a small staff of engineers and technicians, estimates manpower needs and schedules and assigns work to meet completion date, or, as individual researcher or staff specialist may be assisted on projects by other engineers or technicians. The position practices company safety and quality policies and procedure (actively requires conformance) and is responsible for ensuring personal and company compliance with all Federal, State, local and company regulations, policies and procedures for Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.

The Staff Engineer is responsible for the purchase or design of equipment that meets health, safety and environmental standards set by the company and is responsible for performing design reviews and pre-validation assessments to ensure the safe and environmentally sound start-up of new processes. FEA collaboration and non-linear methodology work are both responsibilities.

The position is located in Fremont, CA and may require up to 20% travel both domestic and international.

Qualifications


The Staff Engineer requires a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline and nine or more years of related engineering experience; or MS in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline and seven or more years of related engineering experience; or Ph.D. in relevant discipline and four or more years of related engineering experience. Has significant complex level engineering experience. Experience in the medical device industry is preferred and experience with stents / implants strongly preferred. Regulated work environment experience is required. It is also required to possess mission critical / high reliability industry experience.

This role requires FEA experience / capabilities and non-linear methodology experience preferred. Test Engineering capabilities preferred and mechanical testing and design experience required. In-vitro, implantable and cardiovascular medical device experience is strongly preferred. AutoCAD skills are preferred and strong leadership skills, dynamic team experience, technical report writing and presentation skills are required. It is required to possess strong customer and senior leadership interaction abilities. Strong communication and collaboration skills are required. This position is located in Fremont, CA and may require up to 20% travel both domestic and international.

The Staff Engineer will apply knowledge of general engineering principles, materials, structural mechanics & reliability to achieve product design requirements. The position will interpret customer & marketing input to define technical design requirements, follow Design Control requirements to design, prototype, test and validate product concepts.

The Staff Engineer will provide technical leadership & project management skills to product development team, provide peer feedback & may mentor junior associates as required. The position must possess a clear mastery of theoretical and practical fundamentals and experimental engineering techniques, strong English communication skills, written and oral and provide support to patent attorneys for patent filing. The successful candidate is also required to possess the ability while performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, ability to work in a clean-room environment and ability to work in an environment with moderate noise.
