Janssen Research & Development, L.L.C. develops treatments that improve the health and lifestyles of people worldwide. Research and development areas encompass novel targets in neurologic disorders, gastroenterology, oncology, infectious disease, diabetes, hematology, metabolic disorders, immunologic disorders, and reproductive medicine.
The Global Head Science & Technology provides accountable matrix-based leadership across all functions in C.R.E.A.Te to ensure the delivery of value-added output throughout the entire portfolio of C.R.E.A.Te supported and/or prioritized product or platform projects.
He/she will do this in close collaboration with the Global Functional Head C.R.E.A.Te, the Strategy & Business Management Leader, and all other members of the C.R.E.A.Te Global Leadership Team.
In this role, the individual will act as a communication conduit for portfolio-related business project status, actions, decisions, risks and issues and schedules for Therapeutic and Functional Area strategic initiatives.
He/she will be a member of the C.R.E.A.Te Global Leadership team and will report into the Global Head of C.R.E.A.Te. He/she will monitor and drive progress on all the activities of the discovery research programs and projects (internal/external/ext) as supported by global C.R.E.A.Te functions and/or experts. He/she will provide leadership and technical expertise to the scientific staff allocated to specific programs. By doing so, he/she ensures high quality and timely output portfolio of all projects/programs within budgetary guidelines.
The successful candidate will resolve issues and ensure consistency of process across cross-functional projects to drive overall value through our research portfolio. He/she will be a key point of contact for decision making with major Therapeutic Area/Functional Area/Innovation Center stakeholders.
He/she will take the lead in putting an assessment mechanism, and decision process, in place to prioritize and/or sequence programs and projects within focus areas that require C.R.E.A.Te support. This will ensure alignment of the portfolio with corporate objectives and constraints.
He/she will remain current with advances in discovery research and industry needs, and recommend modifications to the scientific programs as necessary. He/she will provide expert input consistent with business plan strategies. He/she will maintain a state-of-the-art knowledge in specific disease area(s) of focus. He/she will partner with expert groups across Therapeutic and Functional areas, as well as Innovation Centers to evaluate, validate, prioritize and secure new technologies and business opportunities. He/she will provide input to and/or drive the development of strategic plans to leverage technology in research and development by identifying new technologies and areas of new capabilities.
He/she will represent the company to members of industry, academia, and government agencies as required and maintain an overall governance and understanding of dependencies associated with resources and projects across the project portfolio. He/she will provide project, program and portfolio metrics, and analytics to support business and executive decision making. He/she will provide updates to stakeholder and communications to executives, through dashboards and reporting liaison with other business functions to ensure that portfolio progress reports and business reporting are aligned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a PhD with at least 15 years of drug discovery expertise in (bio)pharmaceuticals with a solid track record of delivery of numerous drug candidates through different stages of discovery or preclinical research.
He/she will have proven and demonstrated knowledge in small (and/or large) molecule drug discovery, preferentially in multiple therapeutic domains, and profound knowledge on enabling discovery research expertise and technologies. In addition, He/she will have successful track record of developing proactive partnerships, and managing talent in a complex, matrixed environment.
He/she will be a self-starter who is able to lead effectively and drive decisions with limited supervision in areas of ambiguity. He/she will also have experience in organizing, leading and motivating R&D to deliver technical and business solutions against company objectives, and contributing to business building against aggressive timelines.
He/she will be an effective communicator and influencer across all levels of the organization and a strong negotiator and collaborator who strengthens business relationships. He/ she will have the ability to partner effectively to enable Therapeutic and Functional Area strategies. He/she must be able to balance these different strategies and be able to forge a vision of capabilities that will move the entire business forward.
He/she must demonstrate continuous learning and a curiosity to maintain his/her own knowledge of state of the art technologies. He/she should be open to new approaches of doing business and sharing best practices across the globe.
