Senior Director, Platform Innovation (Boston)-9012121107

Description

J&J Innovation Centers (ICs) are in the process of being opened in San Francisco, Boston and London. The goal of the ICs is to create a critical platform to compete for the top medical innovations at universities and biotech companies allowing Janssen to build the best pipeline in the industry. Operating close to where the greatest innovations occur will give us early access and better insights to make our investment selections. This will allow us to increase our probability of success in on-boarding new products.

The J&J Innovation Centers are recruiting for a Sr. Director, Platform Innovation, located in Boston, MA.

The Senior Director, Platform Innovation will report directly to the Innovation Center Leader with close interactions with senior platform experts in the corresponding functions. The external innovation which the Innovation Centers will be looking for is not only limited to therapeutic assets. External innovation also includes technologies and platforms that can assist in cutting-edge drug discovery or development, whether they are biological or small molecules. At the same time there may be tools, platforms and expertise in J&J which can be made available to external partners. The Senior Director will represent our platform groups both for attracting new technologies and offering our expertise and capabilities to third parties at the J&J Innovation Centers. This person will have an excellent understanding of the J&J R&D capabilities to be able to identify external technologies and platforms which could be of significant incremental value to our own in-house research (based upon Functional input and guidance and in line with our platform strategies). The Senior Director will identify and assess external technologies together with the functional experts and if appropriate coordinate the on boarding of the external platform technologies of interest into our organization. The Senior Director must also/build have a deep network within J&J R&D and as such has a good overview of technologies and expertise in J&J which can be made available to interested external Companies. The Senior Director will work with our functional experts to identify and prioritize capabilities which could be made available to third parties, introduce our capabilities to select partners, support any required transactions together with other IC members and facilitate the collaboration between our functional expert teams and partners. An internal governance and support system will be established. The Senior Director will have a solid scientific understanding of a diverse array of area's such as DSSc, PDMS, BIO, CREATe, Clinical Operations etc. and deep functional expertise in at least one or more of these functional areas. She/he will be highly externally focused and highly networked and closely surrounded by an enabling Innovation Center team. The Senior Director together with the R&D Functions will create and maintain an in depth Strategic Plan similar to the DAS plans in which critical technology platform needs for your organization are identified and prioritized. At the same time an inventory must be made as to which technologies and capabilities we want to make available to third parties. Experts at the ICs (Legal, Finance, Transaction, Alliance Management, etc.) support the Senior Director and Functional Experts to enable smooth and correct technology and expertise transfer.

The Innovation Centers will be our eyes and ears on the ground in the major scientific and entrepreneurial hot-spots in the world and enable us to execute our Disease Area Strategies. The Innovation Centers will have fully integrated capabilities to scout, evaluate, fund and onboard new science, technologies and products. The Innovation centers will be focused on identifying and shaping the most promising science, technology and products which still have to demonstrate clinical proof-of-concept at universities, academic centers and small biotech companies. The innovation Centers will identify early innovation and closely collaborate with innovators and biotech entrepreneurs in order to foster success. To do so the Innovation Centers will have the ability to selectively deploy internal capabilities and resources to progress external products. Significant areas of "micro-expertise" exist in the different Functions within Janssen which cannot easily be sourced by academia and small biotech. Often this relates to complex problem solving in a diverse array of areas such as DSSc, PDMS, BIO, CREATe, Clinical Operations etc. It is this expertise, in collaboration with the use of certain platforms, which can be invaluable in establishing and maintaining quality partnerships. Furthermore the application of this expertise to certain therapeutic assets which are being partnered via the Innovation Centers can tremendously increase the success rate of these assets; maximizing our ability to create significant value. To enable this two-way technology transfer a Senior Director will represent our platform teams CREATe, BioTech and Clinical Operations at each of the Innovation Centers to enable this technology/expertise transfer and utilize the Innovation Center community and network.
