Job Description
The Bariatric & Metabolic market place continues to develop and will continue to evolve over the foreseeable future as Healthcare Professionals, the NHS, Hospitals and Patients realise the enormity of obesity and the associated metabolic co-morbidities. There is a huge clinical and economic impact that this disease continues to have throughout the UK. Public attitudes are also changing - we are now seeing many favorable and constructive articles in the media about the significant clinical impact that bariatric & metabolic surgery has on the health of affected patients, which will further create patient demand for these life saving procedures.
The purpose of this role is to drive sales growth and procedure numbers by effectively executing robust business plans to maximize our market share of products. Also key is to create, convert and develop services, to be able to provide an essential information link to the bariatric care pathway specialists (surgeon, dietician, nurse specialist, endocrinologist etc.) and budget holders (private hospital general managers, PCT commissioners &/or Trust business managers, etc.) to influence the growth of the market. The role also includes the implementation of various market access programs (GP referral program, presentation of bariatric and metabolic business cases to appropriate budget holders, local direct-to-patient marketing campaigns) to ensure growth of existing customers and future customers in this evolving NHS environment.
Key areas of responsibility are as follows:
- Execution of sales and marketing strategies to meet the bariatric and metabolic business objectives and sales targets
- Develop specialist knowledge of bariatric and metabolic products and procedures
- Identify, build and strengthen key customer relationships.
- Work with local territory managers to develop plans and objectives to drive product adoption
- Provide the necessary support and resources to create, convert and develop bariatric and metabolic programs into Centers of Excellence.
- Work with all departments to ensure a high level of customer service to our clients, proactively feeding back opportunities for improvement
- Effectively utilise professional education opportunities to maximize customer proficiency in using Ethicon Surgical Care products and bariatric and metabolic program resources.
- Optimise economic, market expansion tools and program efficiency resources to expand existing bariatric and metabolic programs.
- Plan and prioritise business opportunities for competitive conversions, new technology installation, and market expansion in assigned accounts.
- Drives product and procedure penetration including the uptake of new procedures in the market place, working effectively to identify sources of funding in the NHS to facilitate this through a clinical and economical business model.
Qualifications
Skills and competencies that would be required for this role are listed below:
- Excels at developing and maintaining effective working relationships with customers and key opinion leaders; follows integrity selling process;
- Strong sales background with competence in developing commercial arguments, supported by experience in negotiations, particularly with budget holder decision makers;
- Project Management experience at managing several projects to conclusion, on time and within budget;
- Effective communicator. Experienced in presenting complex customer clinical and budget issues to Senior Management, customers and stakeholders;
- Works effectively in teams and other business areas to ensure a coordinated approach to the marketplace;
- Self-starter. Looks for creative solutions and innovative approaches to everyday business;
- Knowledge of the medical device industry, Ethicon surgical care products, procedures, funding issues and how J&J operates;
- Can manage multiple demands, with a systematic approach to prioritisation and organisation of resources;
- Leverages available business resources and exploits information to understand changing market conditions at territory level;
- Proactively manages a self-development program in Commercial, HEO skills, procedure / product technical knowledge and leadership development, supported by management;
- Agile at making things happen through managing relationships and networks effectively, both within Ethicon Surgical Care and with key external stakeholders earning their trust and respect;

Relevant experience or qualifications required:
The successful candidate will be confident, self-driven, highly competitive, customer centric and with a good understanding of the wider NHS environment. They should have relevant sales experience in secondary care and can demonstrate a successful track record in selling within the medical devices & diagnostics arena. Successful candidates will also have a strong affinity for working closely with others in a team and will show entrepreneurial behaviour. In addition, the ability to build strategic partnerships with key customers is essential.
