An exciting new opportunity has arisen to head Janssen's Government Affairs and Communications team; working closely with your team to lead Janssen's corporate and brand government affairs strategy, build strong networks and sustainable relationships with political and policy stakeholders and position Janssen as a key stakeholder in healthcare policy issues of strategic importance to our business.

As a Head of Government Affairs & Communications your responsibilities will include:

Janssen Internal activities

- Build and execute a coherent, integrated government affairs strategy for Janssen UK, aligned to business priorities and endorsed by the management committee
- Design, lead and manage the implementation of Government Affairs plans/projects - which are to be integrated with communications and the wider External Affairs function - supporting identified products and therapy clusters.
- Provide expert counsel and identify specific actions related to opportunities and threats presented by government policy for identified therapy areas to the external affairs function, brand team and senior management.
- Ensure regular engagement and input into specific prioritised MAST and CVTs, working with brand management to create an integrated brand government affairs plan
- Integrate Government Affairs and Comms into the External Affairs department business plan process
- Develop and disseminate regular reports of key government affairs engagement and progress to Management Committee and brand leadership
- Interpret key developments in government health, economic, science and innovation policy, identify the opportunities and threats to our business and develop appropriate plans to influence and engage in health policy development in line with Janssen's strategic and commercial objectives.
- Work with all levels of Janssen and Johnson & Johnson to develop and convey corporate policy issues pertinent to Janssen in the UK and articulate Janssen's response to those issues.
- Develop briefing documents that highlight policy issues around each of our disease areas to ensure consistent approved messaging when engaging with any external stakeholders
- Represent Janssen UK on the EMEA Govt Affairs group, attending meetings on a quarterly basis
- Communicate regularly and update the J&J Director of Govt Affairs to share and align activities
- Select and commission Public Affairs agencies to provide support across a range of Govt Affairs activities. Review these services against quality standards.
- Mentor and hold quarterly review meetings with Janssen Govt Affairs Managers in devolved nations
- Create an engagement programme for senior Janssen executives to meet and engage with senior policy makers in central government.
- Provide line management and leadership to the Janssen Communications team, ensuring that the Communications and Government Affairs team is fully integrated and aligned to company, brand and external affairs plans.
- Take an active role in the External Affairs Leadership Team, acting as a senior role model leader for the function.

External Relationships

- Engage with a range of political stakeholders including Government Ministers, Civil Servants and Advisers, representing Janssen on a variety of disease topics to highlight policy disconnects and identify opportunities for mutually beneficial solutions and aligned healthcare policies.
- Develop effective networks and relationships with key external stakeholders including, but not restricted to Ministers, Policy Heads, relevant advisers and civil servants; Select Committee members and relevant backbench MPs and Peers; Think Tanks.
- Identify key policy stakeholders for each therapy area and engage with these individuals so that they can have a more informed debate about issues, policy gaps/disjoints and opportunities.
- Present ABPI code and HCBI compliant evidence to these policy stakeholders to enable them to challenge current practice and status quo.
- Engage with external stakeholders to identify areas of mutual interest, leading to the facilitation of events such as debates, parliamentary receptions (e.g. involving patient groups).
- Facilitate introductions and meetings between appropriate Janssen executives and policy makers
- Raise the profile of Janssen as part of J&J to create an understanding of the company's impact on the healthcare environment in the UK.
- Take accountability for maintaining expertise and up to date knowledge and networks, for example through attending party political conferences
- Support the communications team to build and nurture strong partnerships and sustainable, compliant relationships with media and patient group organisations, seeking to ensure a common set of messages across stakeholder groups on specific topics of interest

Qualifications


The successful candidate will have:

- A degree level education or equivalent
- Expertise and current command of the detail and direction of government policy.
- Specialist knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following areas: pharmaceutical industry policy; trends in pharmaceutical science and innovation; Health Technology Assessment; health or industrial economics; British & European legislative processes; NHS policy and structures.
- Significant experience in Government/Public Affairs/Government Lobbying.
- Experience and in-depth knowledge of government policy in relevant areas.
- Experience within the healthcare industry.
- Experience of corporate communications at a senior level.
- High level of verbal and written communication skills.
- Broad knowledge and awareness of current affairs.
- A proven record of demonstrating strategic, creative thinking resulting in tangible business outcomes
- Highly skilled in establishing and building networks with key policy makers
- A team player who is adept at working cross-functionally within a matrix organisation
- Project management
