Under indirect supervision, provides direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment & technical procedures to a group of normal-to-high risk infants. Manages neonatal caseload with physician consultation & collaboration. Serves as patient & family advocate in identifying healthcare needs & actions for neonatal cases. Coordinates pre- & post-operative care activities for normal-to-high risk infants. Supports neonatal units during crisis situations. Utilizes planning, implementation, & evaluation in formulating neonatal diagnosis & intervention.
Essential Functions
- Interprets antenatal/perinatal health history. Assesses gestational age
- Performs resuscitation of newborns in delivery room & in Neonatal Units with use of bag & mask, laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation, cardiac compressions, intravenous access & emergency medications
- Performs physical exams & evaluations on infants in the Delivery, Neonatal & Mother-Baby Units
- Performs specialized procedures on high-risk infants to include umbilical artery & vein catheterization, endotracheal intubation, suprapubic bladder tap, lumbar puncture, peripheral central venous catheterization, peripheral artery catheterization, needle aspiration of pneumothorax, sepsis work-ups & other procedures following clinical competencies for advanced practice
- Orders/Interprets lab tests, radiographs & routine diagnostics to include routine Newborn Screening, head ultrasounds, ophthalmic retinal, & outpatient evaluation
- Prescribes phototherapy. antimicrobial therapy & enteral/parenteral nutrition & supplements
- Makes rounds on designated patients. Evaluates care & progress. Develops plan & writes orders
- Documents admission history & physicals, resuscitations, assessments, procedures, progress notes & discharge summaries
- Collaborates with attending MD regarding treatment plan of assigned infants
- Develops, implements, reviews & revises standards/procedures/protocols for Neonatal Care
- Facilitates patient care communication & information by participating in patient rounds & functioning as patient & family advocate
- Recommends medical & nursing care measures to improve care of infants in neonatal units
- Serves as clinical resource to staff. Identifies learning needs of staff. Implements formal & informal educational programs
- Represents nursing & Kaiser Permanente to community & professional organizations. Consults with colleagues within Kaiser & in other health care delivery systems
- Develops practice guidelines that reflect current research, trends, & technology in the Neonatal Units
- Keeps current with legal & risk management issues & implications for advanced nursing practice
- May prescribe medications
- May perform patient care to the extent necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency & licensing necessary to fulfill job responsibilities & to direct the provision of care on the unit

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in neonatal care
- Master's degree in Nursing
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Valid Hawaii RN License (must meet education requirement(s) for Hawaii State licensure)
- Valid Hawaii APRN Recognition (must meet education requirement(s) for Hawaii State recognition)
- Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) by the National Certification Corporation (NCC) as accepted by the Hawaii State Board of Nursing
- Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) and Taxonomy code required at time of hire
- Skilled in patient advocate role to ensure patient centered focus
- Strong patient assessment skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in leadership, teaching, interpersonal relations, customer service, problem solving, and decision making
- Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone
- Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English
- Training/giving and receiving instructions
- Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g., organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration, and alertness
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) and Taxonomy code required at time of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of Nurse Practitioner in an acute care setting
- Valid Hawaii APRN Recognition with Prescriptive Authority (must meet education requirement(s) for Hawaii State APRN prescriptive authority)
