Position Highlights:
The Laboratory Research Assistant I coordinates and performs day-to-day activities related to routine and complex biochemical, molecular, and histopathologic laboratory procedures involving human postmortem and antemortem biospecimens in support of several multi-disciplinary research studies of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
Position Responsibilities:
Processing, embedding, cutting, and histochemical and immunohistochemical staining of human tissue.
Microscopic evaluation of completed slides to determine staining adequacy.
Biochemical and molecular analysis of human biospecimens.
Trains new research technicians/assistants on procedures related to biochemical, molecular and histopathologic laboratory procedures.
Postmortem human brain and spinal cord, muscle and nerve biopsy, procurement, dissection, and preservation as member of Rapid Autopsy Service.
Solves moderately complex problems and oversees basic, as well as moderately complex, laboratory operations.
Provides on-call coverage as member of Rapid Autopsy Service.
Reviews and revises established procedures to ensure they are accurate and complete.
Develops, performs, and documents quality assurance (QA), quality control (QC), and routine preventive maintenance.
Position Qualifications Include:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field
Minimum of three years laboratory experience with increasing responsibility.
Laboratory experience must include proficiency with histochemical and immunohistochemical staining; RNA isolation, RT-PCR and real time PCR, DNA isolation and measurement assays, agarose gel electrophoresis; cell culture, protein electrophoresis, western blotting, protein immunoprecipitation, ELISA; spreadsheet, database, and graphics analysis software.
Demonstrated interpersonal,oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail essential.
Capable of multi-tasking, remaining flexible and managing time effectively.
Ability to perform procedures requiring manual dexterity and repetitive motions.
On call required as member of Rapid Autopsy Service.
Must have the ability to lift or move 25 pounds; perform repetitive motions required for use of pipette, saw, microtome, vibratome, and other laboratory equipment.
