The Business Systems Analyst is responsible for analyzing and understanding business processes, workflows, roles, data needs, challenges and opportunities so as to be able to concisely document and illustrate business requirements and functional designs as they pertain to process improvement and system enablement.
Primary Responsibilities
- Produce high quality Business Requirements Documents that define project objectives resulting from business and process analysis.
- Publish Requirements Traceability Matrix that ensures that all individual requirements are accounted for in UAT test plans.
- Publish functional designs for reports, interfaces, configuration changes, enhancements, extensions and customizations for components needed to satisfy the overall business requirements.
- Produce training plans and materials that will enable users to become proficient process contributors.
- As necessary, execute test scripts to validate functionality satisfies requirements and specifications to assist testing staff and users.
- Troubleshoot system issues.
- Quickly become the SME for business applications so as to be able to troubleshoot issues, understand the impact if proposed system changes and document accurate requirements and specifications.
- Map as-is and to-be processes.
- Navigate through schema to troubleshoot issues and document data mapping for reports and interfaces.
Specific Requirements
- Proficient in documenting Business Requirements, UAT and regression test plans, cases and scenarios. Outstanding communication (written and verbal) and consulting skills so as to interact with internal Banking and IT customers. Proficient documenting Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM).
- Ability to publish functional designs/specifications for reports, interfaces (B-to-A, A-to-A, etc), and application enhancements. Must be experienced in publishing functional test plans, cases and scenarios that validate functional designs. Comfortable documenting data mapping for interfaces from source to target including transformation logic (FTP, XML, FpML).
- Ability to quickly become the recognized subject matter expert (SME) for the Bank’s applications and interfaces so as to troubleshoot issues and gain confidence from the users that you can represent their departments’ interests when it comes to defining requirements, designing UAT testing, training new users and troubleshooting issues. Ability to navigate and become familiar with custom and COTS applications (from a GUI and schema).
- Establish and enforce standardization of business processes and technologies within FHLB Boston. Investigate and solve problems by documenting solutions and transferring key knowledge to appropriate users.
- Actively participate (and sometimes manage) in project teams consisting of various cross functional roles and consultants. Familiar with standard SDLC responsibilities for all aspects of project lifecycle management and the coordination of resources across different business operating units. Act as a liaison to the business coordinating requirements definition for related initiatives.
- Ability to graphically and accurately map workflow processes that illustrate users, data require and data captured.
- Knowledge of the following financial products preferred: Fixed Income, Bonds, Interest Rate Derivatives.
- Experience with the following types of systems preferred: Summit, Bloomberg, MarketWire, SharePoint, QRM, Principia.
Knowledge/Skills
- Proficient with SQL, TOAD or similar tools to perform simple database queries.
- Familiar with processes and systems that support finance and/or core banking functions.
- Familiar with report tools such as Business Objects so as to develop simple reports.
- Proficient and experienced with:
- learning how to navigate through custom and COTS schema so as to troubleshoot issues or author Functional Design Specifications
- developing Super User or SME knowledge of applications
- authoring functional specifications that address business requirements
- mapping business processes and authoring Business Requirement Documents

- Proven ability to gather, develop, document and maintain clear business requirements, operational policies and procedures, including the designing and documenting detailed process flows, and the development of operational performance and quality metric standards and reports.
- Ability to assess problems and solve them with a strong sense of urgency.
- Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Possesses understanding in the areas of application programming, database and system design.
- Proficient in Microsoft suite of tools including Visio, PowerPoint, SharePoint, MSWord and Excel.
- Knowledge of MS Project is plus.
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in a technical or finance related field
Experience
- A minimum of five years experience that demonstrates progressively increasing responsibilities in business / systems solution implementation.
- Experience in execution and management of all phases of system development efforts.
- Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.
- Experience with data flow diagramming.
- A plus if you were previously a developer.
- Understanding of Financial Services products, operations and systems is a plus.
- Experience in project management is a plus.
