Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of diagnostic medical sonograms (such as abdominal and OB/Gynecology ultrasound examinations) utilizing complex ultrasound.

- Adjusts technical factors relative to the requirements of the study & the physical maturation of the patient.
- Modifies patient positioning techniques relative to the patient's physical & cognitive abilities.
- Always takes special care in handling, positioning and/or restraining infants & geriatric patients to avoid injury or excessive radiation exposure
- Demonstrates competence & understands the overall operational function of the department to include scheduling of patient appointments by telephone, mail, or in person utilizing RIS.
- Demonstrates competence in the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment, real time & mobile, to obtain quality diagnostic images.
- Consistently selects correct technical factors relative to the requirements of the study & the patient's age & body habitus.
- Consistently selects equipment settings & appropriate transducers in accordance w/ department protocols & patient body habitus.
- Consistently processes hard copy images properly, utilizing automated equipment.
- Properly & consistently follows specific infection control techniques relative to ultrasound imaging (e.g., cold sterilization of probes, use of condoms on endocavity probes, etc.).
- Routinely manipulates transducer appropriately to obtain the desired images.
- Consults w/ the radiologist or other clinician for purposes of clarifying orders.
- Selects alternate or additional views appropriately relative to the patient's condition.
- Does not attempt to perform an exam in any case in which it cannot be performed safely and/or properly.
- Consistently demonstrates the ability to differentiate between normal & abnormal anatomy.
- Documents clinical activities in a timely, comprehensive & accurate manner.
- Completes & initials the standard consultation form & the radiology processing record accurately & immediately following each procedure.
- Routinely documents patient history relative to previous surgery, childbirth & other conditions which could affect the ultrasonic image of internal organs.
- Maintains equipment, supplies & work area in accordance w/ department guidelines.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in a major medical center, preferred.
- Experience with Acuson Sequoia, Philips iu-22 and Clickview ultrasound reporting package, preferred.
- Current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification to include registries of physics, abdomen, and Obstetrics/Gynecology
- Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited ultrasound program OR a graduate from a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with current ARDMS certification and one (1) year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in a major medical center.
-BLS (BLS-C) certified or must be obtained during the probationary period.
- Competency in components of sonography as listed: routine abdomen, abdomen Doppler, small parts, thyroid, and obstetrics/gynecology.
Notes:
- This position may require travel for assignment within the San Diego Service Area.
- Work schedule may be adjusted to accommodate department needs.
- This position includes a rotational assignment on the Ultrasound stand-by list.
- Scheduled hours per week is 20-32. Currently the hours are Part Time 20hrs/week with rotating weekends and evenings.
- Start times are between 7am and 8:30am for days, evenings are between 2:30pm and 5:30pm., weekends are between 7am and 8:30am; evenings are between 4:00pm and 5:30pm.
