Leads & manages projects to achieve medical center & outpatient department goals related to risk management, loss prevention, & patient safety such as, but not limited to, risk identification/prevention, reduction in preventable adverse outcomes/incidents, reduction in expenses related to risk/loss, improvement in quality of care outcomes, & creation of a culture of safety throughout all departments within, a medical center & associated medical offices. Accountable for managing all phases of improvement projects including design, prioritization, staffing, development, implementation, analysis, metrics, & reporting.
Essential Functions:
- Leads & manages performance improvement projects designed to achieve organizational goals/objectives in risk management & patient safety
- Develops & implements project plans which identify improvement opportunities, key issues, problems, approaches, performance metrics, & required resources
- Designs processes to address identified problems
- Establishes & manages team membership & time commitments, as well as resource allocation to achieve project goals on time, within scope & budget
- Designs research plans for data gathering & analysis
- Leads data & risk analyses including Root Cause Analyses & Failure Mode & Effect analyses; developing recommendations & action plans
- Provides advice/decision support by developing comprehensive strategies, plans & systems/processes to achieve identified objectives
- Provides insights & recommendations regarding the most effective means/processes to achieve identified objectives/outcomes; facilitates executive level discussions & strategic direction setting; meets regularly w/ Service Area Manager, Director of Hospital Operations, Medical Director, Medical Group Administrator & other personnel to review legal & risk management data, identify issues & take appropriate actions to resolve & prevent recurrence of identified issues
- Provides project leadership to multi-disciplinary teams; motivates team members & facilitates team processes & goal accomplishment; acts as liaison, problem solver & provides guidance to team on performance & productivity issues
- Uses appropriate decision making tools (e.g., risk ranking or cost-benefit analysis) to implement action plans in order of priority
- Prepares reports on professional liability cases & risk management patterns, trends & issues including loss prevention, patient safety & risk reduction
- Coordinates & delivers risk management education, training & communication programs for the medical center; provides updates on legislation; communicates significant events information/analyses; provides consultative services & functions as an expert authority to physicians & other staff regarding all risk management issues; implements & maintains formal communication processes to disseminate information relative to best practices & significant learnings based on performance analyses
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in business or health services administration, nursing or other related field such as public health OR (usually four (4) years) equivalent relevant experience in risk management.
- Certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) required or obtained within one year from date of hire.
- Current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse preferred.
- Usually two (2) - three (3) years of experience in risk management, performance improvement or quality management/improvement, including responsibility for managing large multi-department performance improvement projects.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize analytical skills including Root Cause Analyses, Failure Mode and Effect Analyses, quantitative and qualitative statistics, quality assurance and performance improvement techniques and methodologies.
- Ability to demonstrate and utilize oral and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize interpersonal skills such as facilitation, negotiating, influencing and client centered consulting skills.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience as a professional practitioner in a clinical discipline preferred.
- Relevant master's degree in one of the aforementioned fields preferred.
- Must be able to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
