Under direct & immediate supervision of a surgeon will perform the role of 1st assistant during surgical procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Positions the patient in accordance w/ the surgeon's instruction.
- Uses standard & specialized equipment to aid in patient positioning.
- Provides the surgeon w/ appropriate visualization of the operative site using retractors, sponges, digital manipulation, & other techniques according to standards.
- Utilizes appropriate technique to assist surgeon w/ temporary or permanent hemostasis by providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, & other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation w/ optimal results for the patient.
- Performs duties as a surgical technician in all surgical specialties practicing in the ambulatory surgery center.
- Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist w/ closure of body planes, i.e. sutures & staples.
- Selects & applies appropriate wound dressings.
- Assists w/ patient transport to & from OR, including from gurney to bed.
- Participates in monitoring quality of care according to professional standards & established criteria.
- Performs other related duties as indicated.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Internal Candidates
- 5 years documented experience as a certified surgical technician required.
External Candidates
- 3 years, continuous, documented experience as a certified surgical assistant in the role of 1st assistant.
- High school graduation or GED required.
- Certification credentialed by one of the following is required:
o The National Board for Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting - Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
o Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCC-ST) - Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified First Assistant (CST/CFA) credential.
o National Surgical Assistant Association - Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA).
o American Board of Surgical Assistants - Surgical Assistant - Certified (SA-C).
- BLS Certification required.
- Clinical competence required by attending staff development programs.
External hires must pass a background check/drug screen.
