To assist the pathologists by dissecting and describing all surgical pathology specimens or histologic processing and coordinating case distribution for histologic processing in the gross dissection lab.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare cases to be grossed-in by logging in surgical pathology specimens in the tissue laboratory, assigning succession numbers, checking tissue-examination forms and specimens for completeness and accuracy, and labeling specimen cassettes with accession numbers by differentiation according to varied specimen requirements.
- Assists the pathologists in the assurance that all anatomic pathology departmental copies of reports and necessary tissue blocks are maintained in chronological/numerical order and according to appropriate storage requirements.
- Clarifies, resolves, and documents problems involving pathology reports, tissue blocks, or glass slides.
- Files and maintains microscope slides and paraffin blocks of surgical pathology cases.
- Serves as a resource to clinical staff by answering questions or inquiries, i.e. pathology diagnosis within their scope of practice.
- Maintains instrumentation, performs formalin monitor, prepares stains and maintains pertinent documentation.
- Assists in the evaluation and development of new procedures, methods, quality assurance monitors, and instrumentation.
- Participates in the training or orientation of staff and students.
- Gathers block materials and prepares for shipping items sent for consultation or as requested by providers.
- Coordinates special stains; re-cuts blocks and secures and distributes reports.
- Coordinates the distribution of surgical pathology reports to physicians and medical records with the Pathology Secretary.
- Perform other related duties as directed.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of previous work experience in a pathology assistant capacity required.
- Baccalaureate degree required.
- Certified as a Pathologist Assistant from a national accrediting body (i.e. American Society for Clinical Pathologists) required or be an M.D. with a background in anatomic pathology.
