Qualifications

Under indirect supervision, provides direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment & technical procedures to a group of normal-to-high risk infants. Manages neonatal caseload with physician consultation & collaboration. Serves as patient & family advocate in identifying healthcare needs & actions for neonatal cases. Coordinates pre- & post-operative care activities for normal-to-high risk infants. Supports neonatal units during crisis situations. Utilizes planning, implementation, & evaluation in formulating neonatal diagnosis & intervention.

 

Essential Functions

• Interprets antenatal/perinatal health history. Assesses gestational age
• Performs resuscitation of newborns in delivery room & in Neonatal Units with use of bag & mask, laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation, cardiac compressions, intravenous access & emergency medications
• Performs physical exams & evaluations on infants in the Delivery, Neonatal & Mother-Baby Units
• Performs specialized procedures on high-risk infants to include umbilical artery & vein catheterization, endotracheal intubation, suprapubic bladder tap, lumbar puncture, peripheral central venous catheterization, peripheral artery catheterization, needle aspiration of pneumothorax, sepsis work-ups & other procedures following clinical competencies for advanced practice
• Orders/Interprets lab tests, radiographs & routine diagnostics to include routine Newborn Screening, head ultrasounds, ophthalmic retinal, & outpatient evaluation
• Prescribes phototherapy. antimicrobial therapy & enteral/parenteral nutrition & supplements
• Makes rounds on designated patients. Evaluates care & progress. Develops plan & writes orders
• Documents admission history & physicals, resuscitations, assessments, procedures, progress notes & discharge summaries
• Collaborates with attending MD regarding treatment plan of assigned infants
• Develops, implements, reviews & revises standards/procedures/protocols for Neonatal Care
• Facilitates patient care communication & information by participating in patient rounds & functioning as patient & family advocate
• Recommends medical & nursing care measures to improve care of infants in neonatal units
• Serves as clinical resource to staff. Identifies learning needs of staff. Implements formal & informal educational programs
• Represents nursing & Kaiser Permanente to community & professional organizations. Consults with colleagues within Kaiser & in other health care delivery systems
• Develops practice guidelines that reflect current research, trends, & technology in the Neonatal Units
• Keeps current with legal & risk management issues & implications for advanced nursing practice
• May prescribe medications
• May perform patient care to the extent necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency & licensing necessary to fulfill job responsibilities & to direct the provision of care on the unit
