In journalism, people of color are still a minority; among journalists of color, those who are opinion writers are a minority within a minority. According to the ASNE's 2008 diversity index, Latinos, African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Native Americans make up just 13.5 percent of newsrooms. African-Americans represent 5.3 percent of print journalists; Hispanics, 4.4 percent; Asian-Americans, 3.2 percent; and Native Americans, 0.5 percent. While the survey doesn't say how many minorities sit on editorial boards or write columns, those of us who have done both can tell you: there aren't many.

As traditional pensions disappear and are replaced by 401(k) plans, the onus is on workers to use them to save and invest prudently for retirement. But a new study indicates many employees are not doing a good job of managing their company-sponsored 401(k) accounts.

In addition, an IRS spokesperson in Florida confirmed last week that some economic-stimulus payments have gone to the wrong bank accounts. The stimulus snafu may touch the millions of taxpayers who take out refund anticipation loans or who allow tax preparation firms to deduct their fees from the taxpayer's refund.

On the group's agenda is promoting Republicans for office, including Sen. John McCain of Arizona for president and Stockton City Council District 4 candidate Diana Lowery.
