Massachusetts is not immune to the economic meltdown that has socked the country in the gut. Gov. Deval Patrick announced last week that the state's collected tax receipts came in $223 million under projections. One place to look for wasteful spending is in the state's college and university system, said Rep. Kevin Murphy of Lowell, chairman of the Joint Committee on Higher Education. According to salary data, 259 of the school's 1,255 full-time employees, or 20 percent of the work force, were paid at a rate exceeding $100,000 in 2007.
