This recession has beaten down many older workers and retirees. Sylvester Barron picks them up, dusts them off and helps the unemployed find jobs. Barron runs the North Dallas office of the AARP Foundation's Senior Community Service Employment Program, a federally funded job-training program for unemployed, low-income workers 55 and older.
Sallie Mae, the nation's number one student loan provider, announced on April 6 that it will bring 2,000 outsourced jobs back into the United States, including those in information technology, call centers, and loan servicing. The organization's CEO of Sallie Mae told CNBC Monday that it was simply "the right thing to do," as the unemployment rate hits a new 25-year high.
The sour economy has forced a lot of Akron-area workers into the job market -- including many who haven't had to look for a job in years. Tracy Price, an employment specialist at the Akron Urban League, started a free one-hour class to help job seekers scrape the rust off their interviewing skills.
While steep, the March job losses were consistent with what mainstream economic forecasts had suggested, providing a measure of relief that things aren't worse than expected. That, and the fact that February job losses weren't revised downwards, as previous months had been, suggested that layoffs may be flattening out.
