Valuing diversity
At AstraZeneca, we want to draw upon the widest possible pool of talent and to be the Employer of Choice for our candidates and for our employees and their families. To doso, we look beyond the traditional definitions of diversity.

Defining Diversity
Diversity at AstraZeneca means recognizing, understanding, valuing and gaining benefit from the differences in all of our employees as individuals, for the benefit of our business and our customers, and for the communities within which we work.

Diversity encompasses ALL of the ways AstraZeneca employees are different:

Our Backgrounds:    education, experience, culture, race, religion, and ethnic origin
Our Skills:    language, technical expertise, ability to learn, professional experience, and education
Our Working:    Preferences flexible schedules, telecommuting, business travel, teaming, and individual contributions
Our Personal Circumstances:    family status, disabilities, health, appearances, gender, age, economic status, work/life balance, and sexual orientation
Our Style:    views, opinions, preferences, behaviors, and personalities

We employ over 50,000 people worldwide with a wide variety of backgrounds and skills. Each brings a new perspective to the company. Valuing each individual’s contribution allows us a broader perspective on the world around us – our workforce, our clients, and the communities in which we work. Mirroring our society helps ensure we are focused on the right products, for the right people at the right time and is vital to our business strategy and success.

Ensuring Diversity
Attracting, Retaining and Developing top talent is a top business priority for AstraZeneca. Diversity and Work/Life Strategies are integrated into our core “people processes,” such as Succession Planning and Recruiting. The AstraZeneca Leadership Team is committed to these strategies and continues to find new ways to integrate them into the way we do business.

Members of senior leadership have participated in Diversity workshops, and we are creating action plans to be sure that we continue to meet our commitments to Diversity and Work/Life Balance while also meeting the needs of our business.

We’ve also hired a leader for our Diversity efforts, and our sales organization has appointed a Diversity Champion. In recruiting, we participate in several national conferences and job fairs, including the National Sales Network Conference, National Black MBA Annual Conference, and the National Hispanic MBA Conference. Our business centers around the country work with select colleges and universities to actively recruit diverse candidates.

We participate in the INROADS summer intern program, which helps find summer internships for minority college students.

Special interest groups have been set up for portions of our workforce, including a Senior Women’s Network and a Reservist Network. The groups allow opportunities for networking and mentoring for these specific populations. Other groups are being planned and will be implemented in the future.

Maintaining Diversity
We aim to make working at AstraZeneca an energizing and fulfilling experience. We want people to be positive and enthusiastic about what they are doing, with a clear sense of belonging, purpose, and pride in their contribution to the company's success.

We promote personal empowerment and continuous innovation. We encourage people to share knowledge and ideas across boundaries and build high-performance teams with a common purpose. We strive for a balance between work and personal life.

- Continuous innovation
AstraZeneca's success is based on turning good ideas into innovative, effective medicines. We believe innovation isn't just about research and development. We encourage creativity in everyone in all areas, because the more good ideas we have, the more we can add value for those who benefit from our business. This means giving people the confidence to question assumptions and systems, to challenge each other and build on new insights.

- Work/life balance
Flexibility is key. Personal commitments, family situations, and even commute time can upset the balance between work and personal life. We expect our people's energy and commitment at work, so we believe in managing for results instead of time in the office and providing a supportive work environment with as much flexibility as possible, consistent with achieving business results. Additionally, we have a series of programs in place around the world, which are designed to ensure both the physical and psychological well being of our employees.

- Personal empowerment
Key to AstraZeneca's success is its ability to respond quickly and efficiently to changing business needs. This requires fast and effective decision-making. We help people to understand how their individual roles align with our strategic objectives and encourage them to stretch their assumptions about the limits of their capabilities. We promote leadership by example at all levels, with clear delegation of authority and support so that people are confident in making decisions and implementing them.
