For nearly 60 years, the name Kaiser Permanente has stood for excellence in health care services. Today, over 8.7 million people in nine states and the District of Columbia entrust their care to Kaiser Permanente, making us the largest nonprofit health care organization in the United States. In a single year, we schedule more than 30 million outpatient visits, deliver 87,000 babies, and fill about 53 million prescriptions, thanks to the dedication of some 170,000 employees and physicians.*
Quality of Care We are driven by the needs of our members and our responsibility to the many communities we serve. As a nonprofit organization, our physicians and staff are focused on the delivery of high-quality health care and services, rather than short-term stockholder demands. Progressive and Diverse Work Environment At Kaiser Permanente, our emphasis is on improving the quality of care we provide to our patients and creating a positive environment for our diverse workforce. Just ask Daria Smith or Margaret Salamanca, registered nurses serving our members at Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s Clinica de la Familia, about the advantages of a supportive work culture that not only values diversity but also offers substantial compensation, benefits, and excellent opportunities for professional growth. Culturally Competent Care Kaiser Permanente has long been a leader in providing quality health care and services to diverse populations. Under the direction of its National Diversity Council, the organization has become a leader in advancing culturally competent care—health care that acknowledges cultural diversity in the clinical setting, respects members’ beliefs and practices, and ensures that cultural needs are considered and respected at every point of contact. The Kaiser Permanente Diversity Conference is the organization’s longest-running conference—29 years and counting. Through its Institute for Culturally Competent Care, Kaiser Permanente has established Centers of Excellence—innovative clinical models that respond to the health needs of specific populations. The San Francisco Center of Excellence provides language-specific primary care medical clinics in Spanish and Chinese, as well as on-site services by interpreters proficient in other languages and dialects. A Center of Excellence focusing on the African-American population has been established at Kaiser Permanente’s West Los Angeles Medical Center. The Center focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions especially prevalent among African Americans: sickle cell disease, congestive heart failure, and prostate cancer. Similarly, we have established a Latino Center of Excellence in the Colorado Region based on a multipronged approach to culturally competent care. La Clinica de la Familia, the clinical component, provides primary care through a bilingual family practice and addresses the specific health needs of the region’s Latino membership. The expertise and clinical practices developed at Kaiser Permanente’s Centers of Excellence result in better quality of care and improved quality of life for people from many different backgrounds and cultures.
