Surviving the Job Interview

Before the interview

-- Collect references and letters of recommendation.

-- Research the company.

-- Identify your key skills and accomplishments.

-- Practice the interview.

-- Find something to wear. It should be something nice but without excessive jewelry.

-- Practice driving to the business and find a place to park.

-- Call to confirm your appointment.

-- Get a good night's sleep.

-- Arrive for the interview 10 minutes early.

-- Do a last-minute check of your appearance to make sure you look neat and clean. Your makeup should not be too heavy.

-- Prepare a resume and take a copy with you.

-- Make sure you have other necessary information: your Social Security number, names and addresses of adult references, work history and the schools you have attended.


While waiting

-- Look confident and busy. Don't slouch.

-- Don't chew gum, don't smoke and don't bring a friend.


During the interview

-- Shake hands when you enter and leave the interview.

-- Pay attention and make eye contact.

-- Be honest, polite and articulate. Have a positive attitude.

-- Ask questions about the job and the company.

-- Write down the name and number of the interviewer.


After the interview

-- Send a thank-you note.

-- Make a follow-up call after about a week.
