Jobless Claims Rise by 11,000 in Week

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- First-time claims for U.S. unemployment insurance benefits rose by 11,000 during the week ending Oct. 17, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.
The 531,000 initial benefits claims contributed to a four-week rolling average of 532,250, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's rolling average of 533,000.
The U.S. unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.8 percent.
The biggest increases in claims for the week ending Oct. 10 were reported by Florida, with 9,976 additional claims; New York, which added 5,411; and Wisconsin, which added 4,999, the report said.
State-by-state statistics lag a week behind the national report.
For the week ending Oct. 10, the biggest decreases were reported by California, with a decline of 7,062 claims; Tennessee, declining by 294; and Maine, with 140 fewer claims than the week of Oct. 3.
