The number of workers who consider jobs or unemployment as the nation's worst economic problem has quadrupled since early October, and more and more people believe the country is in a downright depression, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center.

Released Thursday, the poll conducted in the first week of February found that 42 percent of Americans are citing "jobs" as the country's most important economic problem, up from 18 percent three months before.

The proportion of workers who believe the country has entered a depression has hit 30 percent, up from 22 percent in October.

Twenty-one percent of the 1,300 people interviewed said they expect to be laid off or take a pay cut in 2009, up from 15 percent about a year ago.

"Notably, much of the increase has come among well-educated, high-income workers, who are now about as likely as less-educated, lower-income workers to predict job problems in the coming year," said a report summary. "The wide income differences last year in predictions of job losses or compensation cutbacks have disappeared."
