Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) delivered pink slips to 3,000 employees Tuesday, in a second round of job cuts that began in January, when the company laid off 1,400.
At the time of the January cuts, the company announced it would eliminate 5,000 jobs, meaning that the software giant is approaching that goal, CNET News reports.
In a letter to employees (and acquired by the Seattle Times' "Microsoft Pri0" blog), CEO Steve Balmer implied that the company's cuts may go even deeper than the goal set in January.
"As we move forward, we will continue to closely monitor the impact of the economic downturn on the company and if necessary, take further actions on our cost structure including additional job eliminations," he said.
Yet, Microsoft is hiring up to 3,000 employees for other aspects of the company that are expanding, such as its online services.
