The Conference Board, an independent, non-profit organization that analyzes economic and business conditions, reported today that online job postings rose by a quarter-million during May, to 3.367 million. While the 250,000 additional jobs represented the largest gain since October 2006 and the first positive movement since October 2008, the overall number is still down 25% year-over-year.
On a regional level, 43 of the 50 states experienced online job posting gains. In the West, California and Arizona, two of the most populous states in the region, experienced significant increases (respectively 30,700 and 9,100), offsetting the downward trend seen in those states since Summer 2007. In the southern region, Texas (11,300) and Florida (5,700) enjoyed increases, as did New York (20,300) in the Northeast region.
Notable job increases by category included positions in management (43,600); office/administrative support (41,600); computer/mathematical science (34,800) and health practitioners (20,100).
