Even as the Senate votes on whether the Supreme Court will have its first Hispanic justice, the American Bar Association has elected Stephen N. Zack, a Miami-based attorney, to be its president-elect. Zack, who is Cuban on his mother's side and American on his father's side, will serve one year in the president-elect role before ascending to the office of president in 2010. He is a partner in the national law firm Boies, Schiller and Flexner.
One of Zack's priorities appears to be enhancing the pipeline into the legal profession, so that students from divergent backgrounds can get into law schools and positively affect the system as a whole.
"When we talk about 'access to justice' we need to expand our definition," said Zack in a statement. "It's not only about making sure everyone who needs a lawyer has access to one. If law schools are not accessible to students from every walk of life, we're not going to have enough lawyers in this country to help the people who need it the most."
Zack, who grew up in Cuba, has practiced law for more than 35 years since earning his juris doctorate degree from the University of Florida. He has a long history of serving on boards and in roles involving diversity issues and civil rights. His focus as president-elect will see him continuing this trend, specifically targeting issues like Hispanic legal rights, immigration and civic education.
