Comcast Corp./NBCUniversal has created a Joint External Diversity Advisory Council that will advise senior executive teams on the issue of diversity, according to a Thursday news release.
The Joint Diversity Council will consist of four, nine-member Diversity Advisory Councils representing the interests of Hispanics, African-Americans, Asian-Americans and women. The diversity councils grew out of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that Comcast signed with various national diverse leadership organizations.
Six Hispanic groups were instrumental in creating the MOU that became a blueprint for negotiations with the other diverse leadership organization. Hispanic organizations participating in the MOU negotiations were the Cuban American National Council, Hispanic Federation, League of United Latin American Citizens, National Council of La Raza, National Hispanic Media Coalition and SER-Jobs for Progress National Inc.
The Diversity Advisory Councils will provide advice on the five focus areas outlined in the MOU: corporate governance, employment/workforce recruitment and retention, procurement, programming, and philanthropy and community investment.
The first Joint Diversity Council will be held in May. It will meet formally on a semiannual basis, according to the Comcast release.
Members of the National Hispanic Advisory Council are:
-- Lillian Rodriguez López, council chairwoman and president of the Hispanic Federation.
-- Alba E. Martinez, council vice chairwoman and principal in Vanguard Education Market Group.
-- Martin J. Chavez, executive director, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability USA.
-- Guarione M. Diaz, president and CEO, Cuban American National Council.
-- Beni Matias, educator and filmmaker.
-- Janet Murguía, president and CEO, National Council of La Raza and incoming chairwoman of the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility.
-- Alex Nogales, president and CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition.
-- Javier Palomarez, president and CEO, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
-- Brent Wilkes, national executive director, League of United Latin American Citizens.
In addition, Lydia Hernádez-Vélez, Philadelphia's deputy managing director for the aging, sits on the National Women's Advisory Council; and Jarrett Tomás Barrios, president and CEO of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is a member at large for the Joint Diversity Councils.
