Hankook Tire is expected to create some 1,800 full-time jobs and invest $800 million at its first manufacturing plant in the U.S., it was announced Monday. The plant will be sited in Clarksville, Tenn.

Hankook plans to break ground for the new plant by the end of next year and begin tire production by 2016, according to a news release.

"This new facility will help Hankook Tire accomplish our plan to establish a production base in all major markets," Seung Hwa Suh, vice chairman and CEO of Hankook Tire, said in a statement. "We will be able to provide our customers, consumers and car makers with high-quality tires and industry-leading service to meet the demands of the American market."

The announcement was made in Clarksville in front of about 200 local and state officials and reporters.

"I want to thank Hankook Tire for its substantial investment in Tennessee and for the 1,800 jobs they'll create in Montgomery County," Gov. Bill Haslam said.

The location offers an extensive transportation network, including rail, air and trucking routes, as well as regional access to the Mississippi River inland waterway.

Hankook Tire America Corp., headquartered in Wayne, N.J., is growing in the U.S. tire market, leveraging investments in technology, manufacturing and marketing, according to the release. It produces tires for passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, medium trucks and buses.
