Palm Inc., maker of the Treo, Pre and other mobile products, announced Wednesday the appointment of Jon Rubenstein as the company's new chairman and chief executive.
The appointment by the board of directors comes as Ed Colligan steps down after 16 years of leadership roles at the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company.
"I am very excited about taking on this expanded role at Palm," Rubinstein, who joined Palm as executive chairman in 2007, said in a news release. "Ed and I have worked very hard together the past two years, and I'm grateful to him for everything he's done to help set the company up for success. With Palm webOS we have ten-plus years of innovation ahead of us, and the Palm Pre is already one of the year's hottest new products. Due in no small part to Ed's courageous leadership, we're in great shape to get Palm back to continuous growth, and we plan to keep the trajectory going upward."
Said Colligan, who plans to take some time off then join the private equity firm Elevation Partners, which has a stake in Palm: "I'm very proud of what Palm has accomplished so far. We pioneered two major product categories and I believe we are on our way to defining the standard for the mobile Web. I'm extremely proud of our team, and grateful to have played a role in turning Palm around."
Rubinstein, 53, is a former executive at Apple. According to Wikipedia, he was instrumental in the creation of the iPod and left his position as senior vice president of the iPod division in 2006. The site says he is married to Karen Richardson, chairman of the board of directors of hi5, the world's third-largest social networking site.
Rubinstein assumes his new CEO role on June 12.
